To encourage professional growth of school board members, Tennessee School Board Association (TSBA) offers a master school board member award to members who invest their time and effort into becoming more informed and more effective school board members. Phyllis Townsend, fifth district school board member from Lewis County, was presented her Master School Board Member Award at the 2018 TSBA Leadership Conference and Annual Convention held November 1-4 at Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville. Attending from Lewis County were, front left, School Board member Glenda Atkinson, Townsend, Director Benny Pace; back, School Board member Johnny Clayton, Board Secretary Angela Leigh, School Board members Nancy McDonald, Richie Brewer and Lindsey Himes. In order to achieve Level V of the TSBA Boardsmanship Award Program, school board members must attain the necessary points identified in the award program and submit a portfolio for judging. Once a board member completes his/her Level V portfolio, they must submit it to TSBA. Current Level V master school board members serve as judges. Only portfolios that receive a score of 25 or above will receive the Level V Master School Board Member distinction.
