The Lewis County High School Lady Panthers finished their season on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 with a loss in the first round of the Region 6 Tournament againt Creekwood, finishing second in the 12AA District Tournament.

The Ladies traveled to East Hickman on Wednesday, May 9 to face the second place Lady Eagles in the semi-final rounds of the 12 AA District Tournament. Shelby Tiller pitched for an awesome win over the Lady Eagles with a score 3-1.

Lady Panthers making ball contact were Olivia Brewer with a double, and Leanna Amacher, Allie Henderson, Kelby Reeves, Kaylee Schmittou, and Bethaney Bass with a single each. This win was the first time this season the Lady Panthers had defeated East Hickman.

On Thursday, May 10, the Lady Panthers traveled to first place Marshall County for competition against them for the 12AA District Championship.

The Lewis County Ladies stunned the Lady Tigers with their awesome playing ability defeating them 6-5. Tiller was on the mound again for the win.

Lady Panthers hitting the ball for the win were Amacher with 3 singles, Tiller with 2 singles, Schmittou with a triple, and Bass, Reeves, and Shiloh Cottrill with a single each.

Because this loss was Marshall County’s first one in the double elimination tournament, the Lady Panthers and Lady Tigers faced off in another game that evening.

The game got off to a great start until the umpire made a mistake about a rule violation. The Lady Panthers fell short in the second game falling 10 to 5. Tiller and Bass shared the pitching duties for the Lady Panthers.

Hitting the ball for the Lady Panthers were Reeves with a double and a single, Brewer with a triple, and Tiller and Cottrill with a single each.

This loss gave the Lady Panthers the second place position in the 12 AA District Tournament.

Kelby Taylor Reeves signed her letter-of-intent to play softball at Columbia State Community College. Kelby is currently a Senior at Lewis Co. High and enjoying her fourth year as a starter on the Lady Panther Softball team. Kelby currently holds the single season and career record for homeruns. In last year’s season, Kelby had nine homeruns and two grand slams.

As a Junior, she was selected as a member of the All-District team, District 12AA Offensive MVP, and the Middle TN Softball Coaches Association (MTSCA) All-Mid State team. Kelby was recently selected to be published in the latest edition of USSSA Softball Best of the Best publication.

She has been involved with travel ball since she was ten and has played for elite teams such as, TEAM WORTH, TN Force, and the TN Eagles. These teams have traveled to hundreds of tournaments in several states, including Florida, Nevada, and California and she has helped to bring home many championships including the USSSA State title.

Kelby stated, “I am excited to be given the opportunity to play softball at the collegiate level. I have worked hard to accomplish this goal. Columbia State felt like the right choice. They have a great competitive softball program and I will still be able to be close to my family and friends.”

Present for the signing were her parents, Keith and Chanda Reeves, sister Kerrigan, LCHS Coaches Damien Clayton, Greg Amacher, and Sandra Thompson and Columbia State coaches Rick Stevens, Johnny Littrell and Randy Brewer.

Judy and Tim Zaunbrecher's Amber Falls Winery and Cellars at Ridgetop was the setting for a wonderful fund raising evening of music, food and prizes this past Thursday evening that was all part of raising money benefiting the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, giving hope to children with catastrophic illness regardless of ability to pay. The event was put on in conjunction with the annual Gift Of Life For St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, organized by Wayne Tiller that will take place at Hohenwald Municipal Golf Course this coming week.

The Titan Caravan rolled into town Thursday, May 3, 2012 along with Wildlife Officers from various Tennessee State Parks displaying many species of endangered birds of prey.

Jean “J.P.” Paul Beatty, age 87, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012 in Life Care Center in Columbia.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2012 in the chapel of McDonald Funeral Home with Don Pollock and Thomas Vann officiating. Interment followed in the Swiss Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Beatty was born August 24, 1924 in Hohenwald to the late Monroe and Alida Schubert Beatty. He was retired from Dana Corporation, a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army, member of Masonic Lodge 607 for over 60 years, member of the American Legion, VFW, and Scottish Rite, and Methodist in faith.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Pollock Beatty of Hohenwald; brothers-in-law, James Pollock of Hohenwald and Joe Pollock of Huntsville, Alabama; sister-in-law, Betty Faye McClain of Mt. Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Haley's Chapel or Oak Grove Methodist Church.

A memorial service for Carolyn Poag Miller, age 69, a resident of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be held May 26, 2012 at Brown Cemetery on McCord Hollow Road in Lewis County.

She passed away December 14, 2011. Her remains were cremated and will be placed beside her son.

Ms. Miller was born September 23, 1942 in Wyandotte, Michigan to the late Archie Dale and Minnie Emily Lawson Poag. She was preceded in death by her parents and three children.

She is survived by daughters, Carolyn Diane Coble of Mountain Home, Arkansas and Teresa Miles of Folsem, California; one son, James Miller of Covington, Louisana; two sisters, Patricia McClain of Hohenwald and Irene West of Waynesboro; grandsons, Christopher and Matthew Miller; and one granddaughter, Cassandra Elam, all of Mountain Home, Arkansas; and numerous great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Edgewood Baptist Church located on Highway 50 East with Michael Redding officiating.

Mrs. Leach was born February 16, 1957 in Wyandotte, Michigan to Thomas and Ermadean Hinson Hickerson. She was a cook for Homestead Restaurant in Centerville and was a member of the Kimmins Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Leach of Centerville; sons, David McCann and William Givens, both of Centerville, and Steven Leach of Dickson; four grandchildren; her parents, Thomas Hickerson of Detroit, Michigan and Ermadean Hickerson of Centerville; half-brother, Tommy Hickerson and half-sisters, Linda Householder and Brenda Franklin, all of Detroit, Michigan.

Betty is survived by her husband, Cecil David O’Dell of Hohenwald and Peoria, Arizona; daughter, (Betty) Jean Hunt of Wickenburg, Arizona; sons, James E. Wolfe, Jr. (location unknown), and David Sean O’Dell of Surprise, Arizona; granddaughter, Krysta Breanne Bell, Surprise, Arizona; and grandsons, Nicholas Anthony Bell of Seattle, Washington and Paul Justin Black of Placencia, California.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Denise Wolfe Black of Encinitas, California.

Betty spent the last few years residing in Hohenwald and Peoria, Arizona. She was an active member of the Piney Creek Baptist Church in Hohenwald.

At Betty’s request, family will hold a private family memorial service.

In lieu of flowers and cards, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, Sun City, Arizona.

He was a graduate of Colorado State University, Life member of NRA, Assistant Chief of Wildlife with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Active Explorer Scout Master in Crossville, an avid hunter and fisherman, and one of the founders of the Tennessee Hunters Safety Program.

Preceded in death by parents, Henry John Pugh and Dorathy Belle Pottorf Pugh; grandson, Christopher Adam Pugh and son-in-law, James Nash Thompson.

He is survived by wife, Jennie Pugh of Hohenwald; two sons, Tom (Karan) Pugh of Smyrna, and Tim (Jackie) Pugh of Nashville; two daughters, Terrie (Trent) Brotherton of Lebanon and Tammy (Tony) Hartley of Fairview; one sister, Bonnie Reisdorph of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Kari Gordon, Aron (Mandy) Easley, Amy (Clayton) Hardee, Jennifer Kendrick, Katie (Angel) Negron, Rebecca Kendrick, Trent Alan Brotherton, Katherine (Mike) Isaacson, Scott Brotherton and Nikki Hartley; great grandchildren, Kadence Gordon, Owen Rockenbach, Bailey Pugh and Ella Negron.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home in Franklin with Jim Taylor officiating.

Class president, Allison Renee Henderson, will welcome everyone. Haylee Rae Trull will present the Valedictorian speech and Salutatorian Elizabeth Marie Vaughan will also address the class.
