Panthers back in action at Loretto

After their bye week, the Lewis County High School Panthers will return to action this Friday night when they travel to Loretto to do battle with one of their oldest rivals.

The Panthers (5-2) and Mustangs (0-8) will square off in an important Region 5AA contest. The game is a must-win contest for the Panthers, who control their own destiny as far as post-season play goes. The top four teams in the region advance to the TSSAA Playoffs. The first and second place teams host first round playoff games.

A victory over Loretto, followed by a season ending win in two weeks over Hickman County would guarantee a spot in those playoffs. Sandwiched in between those two contests is a road trip to 4A Lawrence County.

This Friday night’s slate of regional games has the potential to really throw things into chaos. If favored Waverly defeats Scotts Hill and Hickman County were to defeat Riverside at home, then a Panther victory over Loretto would lead to a four way tie from second to fifth place in the region.

The best case scenario for the Panthers is to win out, have Riverside and Waverly win on Friday night and Riverside lose to Waverly in two weeks. That would put Scotts Hill, Riverside and Lewis County in a three way tie at season’s end, with the Panthers picking up the second place finish because of overall record.

Yet as earlier stated, the Panthers truly control their destiny. With three weeks left in the regular season, theoretically, they can still finish anywhere from first to sixth in the region.

This week’s contest against the Mustangs will kick off at 7 p.m. at the Loretto High School field.
