Year old theft case begins to unravel

It was nearly 3 a.m. in May 2015 when four men entered the Hohenwald Wal Mart store. A short time later, they left a broken display case and got away with more than $13,000 worth of cell phones.

An investigation ensued which spread across the region to police departments and to Wal Mart stores. Photos and descriptions of the suspects were circulated but it was October, 2015 before a detective in Oxford, Mississippi matched two cases resulting in pertinent information.

A Wal Mart in Oxford was robbed in the same manner and a vehicle registration led investigators to a car rental company in Memphis. A comparison of photos between cooperating law enforcement agencies helped identify three of the suspects.

John Martez Jones, age 22, and Stefon Jones, age 18, of Southwall Street in Memphis were taken into custody in Memphis on charges of theft of property and vandalism. John Jones was arrested on May 13, 2016 He appeared in Lewis County General Sessions Court May 26, 2016. He is scheduled for a second appearance June 9.

Stefon Jones was arrested April 15, 2016 and appeared in Lewis County General Session court May 12. His case has been bound to the Circuit Court to be handled by criminal information on June 8, 2016. A bond was set at $35,000 for each.

Both remain in Lewis County Jail. Two others involved in the case, one a juvenile, are still at large.
