  • One Day At A Time

    Mar 11, 2021

By Evelyn “E.T.” Trevathan, Contributing Writer Well it is a beautiful and sunny, but windy and still cold morning. I have a fire in the old wood heating stove and I can smell the smoke drifting in the wind. I’ve got my cup of hot coffee. The cats are playing in the sunshine. The days are getting warmer and I am ready for spring. And I’m hoping and praying for a better year. March 3 was one year since the tornadoes hit, causing so much damage - people were homeless, sick and sad. Then the pandemic hit - what would people do? Well people...

  • Tyrades! Have You Remembered Your Pets in Your Will?

    Mar 11, 2021

Sure, it made the rounds of the “News of the Weird” columns when a Nashville businessman left $5 million in a trust fund for his beloved border collie Lulu; but such gestures aren’t as eccentric as you might think. Many estate plan experts now include pet planning as part of the comprehensive services they offer. (“That takes care of your rare cockatoo and your thoroughbred racehorses. Now surely you’ll want to upgrade to the premium plan and maintain your GUT BACTERIA in the manner to which they’ve become accustomed?”) Really, you’re just d...

  • Is Tennessee ready for the slippery slope of legislating by phone?

    Mar 11, 2021

by Deborah Gibson During the pandemic, members of local and state governing bodies have been allowed to conduct meetings electronically per executive order by Gov. Bill Lee. They have not had to hold physical meetings in a physical place. They can hold meetings on Zoom or even by telephone conference call, as long as they allow the public real-time live audio or video access and follow other rules. In some instances, this has meant that the governing body is on videoconference, and the public must show up physically at city hall to watch them...

  • Truth in sentencing reform advances

    Rep. David Byrd|Mar 11, 2021

In house committees this past week, the Truth and sentencing reform advances. House Bill 1047 requires any person convicted of violent or sexual offenses that historically target women and children to serve their full sentencing term as assigned by a jury or judge. While the legislation does not remove judicial discretion, it ensures that parole or probation are not options for those found guilty of crimes that fall into these categories of offenses. If passed, it strengthens protections for...
