As one explores Lewis and Maury County, it becomes increasingly evident that growth and new construction, as well as add-ons and renovation projects, are in full swing. Engaging in any form of construction or renovation inevitably leads to extensive to-do lists for every room in a home. Often, these lists resemble checkerboard roadmaps, marked with highlighted words, arrows, asterisks and red inked crossed-out items that may not align with the available budget. The renovation wish list can sometimes appear overwhelming, but the very essence of...

Well it is a beautiful morning here in our little valley. It is very quiet here on the front porch. The cats are taking a nap, they ate their breakfast and went back to bed. The neighbor’s cows are grazing in their pasture and I just saw a squirrel in a tree here in the front yard. Bob is washing the breakfast dishes and I am having my coffee. I heard an airplane go over and even it seemed to have a lonesome sound, it was not very loud and it sounded far away. I am enjoying every minute of this quiet time, but I know outside of our little v...

“Because I could not stop for cataracts, they kindly stopped for me.” Someday I hope to find time to luxuriate in the collected works of poets such as Emily Dickinson – on paper, not as an audiobook -- so my ears perked up when my recent eye exam revealed the early stages of cataracts in both eyes. (There’s a tiny hemorrhage in each of my peepers as well, but cataracts have center stage for this week’s column.) Don’t worry. The optometrist estimated I have five to 10 years until the cataracts w...
