  • Best year ever

    Jun 30, 2022

When the 2021-22 fiscal year opened on April 1, it wasn’t a normal year. The country was still in the throes of the pandemic, and the Elks National Foundation started the year with caution. The ENF maintained flexibility for grants, which allowed Lodges to continue responding to the most pressing needs in their communities. The Elks took those grants and ran with them just like they did in FY2021. They supported food pantries, shelters, health care clinics, schools, veterans’ organizations and so much more. When neighbors needed Elks more tha...

  • High temps mean high energy use

    Jun 30, 2022

Summer heat is expected to continue across the region this week, driving up demand for the reliable energy TVA and local power companies like Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative supply. TVA builds margins into the system planning to help ensure the power grid remains stable and secure during high demand periods, even with the increased load and economic growth seen in the pandemic recovery. High power demand – especially during the peak hours of Noon to 8 p.m. – directly contributes to higher future power bills so, to help save money, TVA...

  • Water... The best toast to our health

    Jun 30, 2022

No one on this planet can live without this precious liquid for more than a few days. After all, we’re made mostly of water. Sixty percent of most adult bodies are water. Infants are true “water babies,” weighing in at eighty percent water. By retirement age, the ratio drops to around fifty percent. There is water in every cell of the body and in every type of body tissue. Water in the body helps digest the sandwich you had for lunch and loads the blood with the dissolved nutrients, which it carries to each living cells. In the process, water h...

  • Senator Joey Hensley, MD: Tennessee 28th District Capitol Hill Week in Review

    Jun 30, 2022

The 112th General Assembly has adjourned for 2022, and it was a very successful year. We have taken measures for Tennessee to be a better place to live, work and to raise a family. I will go over the laws passed this session over the next few weeks. Cutting taxes for farmers – The General Assembly approved legislation that provides tax relief to farmers. It allows farmers to avoid paying sales tax on items and services used for agriculture production, including building materials, repair services, and labor, among other expenses. The tax r...

  • Tyrades! Do Gallup Poll respondents have a prayer?

    Danny Tyree|Jun 30, 2022

You’ve probably seen the screaming headlines about a Gallup survey revealing that Americans’ belief in God has hit an all-time low. I’m not here to quibble with the atheists, agnostics and alternate-spirituality practitioners who answered the survey. No, I’m just flummoxed by subsets of the supposedly pro-God respondents. You see, the survey also branched into questions about prayer. Of the 81% of Americans who conceded still believing in God, 28 percent said He hears prayers but cannot interve...

  • Dehydration: Not a pretty sight

    Jun 30, 2022

Every day, we lose an amount of water equal to about four percent of our total body weight. If we do not take in enough perspiring, urinating and defecating, warning signals will go off loud and clear. Early on, when we have lost just a little water, equal to about one percent of our body weight, we feel thirsty. If we ignore the thirst, it gets more intense. When water loss raises to about two percent of our weight, our appetite fades. Our circulation slows as water seeps out of blood cells and blood plasma. And we experience a sense of...
