    Local and state political candidates fought for their seats all through the summer, waiting for Thursday, August 6, to arrive. Here in Lewis County, we had 2,719 show up to polls to cast their votes. The widely debated Sales Tax Referendum, where taxes would have been raised from 2.5 percent to 2.75 percent to help with school projects, was voted down by only 195 votes.     School officials reported the opening two weeks of classes went smoothly with both students and staff members in all schools responding well to temperature checks.     By Jonah Keltner, Lewis County Mayor Solid Waste Director Bradley Loveless and his landfill attendants continue to make huge strides in reducing, reusing and recycling at our Transfer Station. In July of 2019, the Transfer Station sent out 29 trailers of garbage to the Decatur County Landfill.
