Well it is a cool and rainy morning here in our little valley, the wind is blowing and I can hear a low rumble of thunder. The cats have eaten and are snuggled down for their nap, I think they like this cooler weather. The trees are beginning to take on more of their fall colors and I have noticed that the yellow goldenrod flowers are in full bloom. The neighbor boys came over and cut down some trees we had along the creek that were dead and that made us a big stack of firewood for our wood heater this winter. I still call them boys but they...
Week of September 16 The past week has been like the one before but the weekend was warmer and so we are probably going to have some warmer weather again. This is the way it goes most of the time before it really gets into fall. The weather is like fall, but then it is summer again. I enjoy the cooler temperatures and even the ones at night in the fifties and sixties. Those that I know of who are sick at home, in the hospital or nursing homes are: G.Y. Bennett, Connie Bonner, Dorothy Brown, L.C. Bowen, Amy Carroll, Joann Carroll, Kathleen...

When I worked at my late uncle’s junkyard during junior high school, one of the regular customers (a crusty coot who resembled a cantankerous Roy Rogers sidekick wannabe) assured us that he luxuriated in a steaming bathtub each and every night. We were skeptical, but it still burned in my brain an image of grimy tumbling tumbleweeds popping through the suds. Brrrrr. Anyhow, for the past several decades I’ve taken the uprightness of a daily shower for granted. But a recent social media ker...
A preacher walked into the Herald office. With faithful interest, he answered 'Question on the Street' by saying, "Do you know Jesus?" The street pollster had been stumped on what to ask next, so people were asked what they would ask. The religious question was asked in Lewis and Lawrence counties. Everybody knows Jesus, according to the poll conducted early this month. The survey was conducted with what, in retrospect, appears now to be a realistic expectation; that the results would be...
