By Evelyn Trevathan, Contributing Writer Well it is a cool fall morning here in our little valley. I have got my coffee and I am sitting out on the front porch. The sun is shining and there is a little breeze blowing and now the leaves are really falling off the trees. I have got an old blanket and I am covered up and I have one of the cats sitting next to me and I have got her covered up too. The other cats had their breakfast and now are out in the yard chasing leaves. I will not be able to sit out here very much longer but I wanted to enjoy...
By Dorothy Warf, Contributing Writer We are back to having some warmer weather especially during the day but the nights have also not been as cold as they were a few nights ago. We have had a killing frost and almost anything that can’t stand the cold weather is black and laying on the ground. The weather person has said that we might get some rain this week and it would be welcome, it is really dry around the area. Those I know of who are sick either at home, in nursing facilities or in the hospitals are: Connie Bonner, L C Bowen, Timmy B...

Perhaps it’s partly because my mother owns a huge antique desk from Milky Way Farm (the former estate of Franklin C. Mars, founder of Mars Candies), but I pay keen attention to the annual flurry of “filler” news items about Halloween candy. “Prices up or down? What’s hot and what’s not? Should I call my manual laborer cousin and rub this sweet gig in his face or not?” (Think of the perennial stories as being like the swallows returning to San Juan Capistrano, except with cavities, tummy aches a...

They're back.....everywhere. One of this season's and our most important assets. Using leaves is working with nature to build healthy soil for your garden, flowers, shrubs and trees. One easy way is to mow and shred the leaves. A grass catcher on the mower makes this easy. Put the leaves directly on the soil in the garden and around plants. After a few inches, put the rest in the compost pile or bag them and use as mulch for spring garden. It enriches the soil with wonderful natural fertilizer....
