Are you a faithful Christian who is concerned about empty pews – and the steadily decreasing impact of Christianity on the social fabric? There’s good news about the Good News. After years of procrastination, I have stretched beyond my 600-word columns and written an honest-to-goodness BOOK. My first effort is a departure from my usual lightweight tomfoolery (although you’ll find snark, pop culture references and stream-of-consciousness observations aplenty). It’s a breezy motivational book titled “Yes, Your Butt Still Belongs in Church” (...
Preparation for the upcoming session on January 12th Preparations are already underway for the most important task we will undertake next year – our state budget. From funding such priorities as education, health care services, public safety and our roads, the appropriations bill is the most far reaching bill passed each legislative session. The importance of this legislation is highlighted by the fact that passage of the budget is the only duty prescribed for the General Assembly by Tennessee’s constitution. During the week of November 16t...
Letter to the Editor Healthcare in Hohenwald I have lived in Hohenwald now for five years and it is becoming increasingly clear that although there is relatively good clinical healthcare on a day to day basis, there is a serious failing. I understand there was a hospital and emergency room here in earlier times but that it was sold out in favor of the Maury Regional Hospital. Today no such service exists. There are emergency rooms in Columbia, Linden and Centerville. Two of these towns are smaller than Hohenwald - all in a 30 mile radius. This...
Thanksgiving is the unofficial beginning of the Holiday season and it has different meanings to each of us. For most it is being with family and friends, having too much delicious food, and watching some football. Let’s not forget the huge sale papers advertising the bargains to be had by the early shoppers on “Black Friday”. Most everyone is familiar with the story of the “first” Thanksgiving with the pilgrims and the Indians, but I wonder how many know about the Proclamation issued by George W...

"Picking out a Christmas tree is a special event for families here in Southwest Tennessee," Duncan Christmas Tree Farm owner Vicky...
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), small gatherings are currently playing a significant role in spreading COVID-19. This holiday season, it remains vital that we continue to do our part to slow the spread of illness — particularly as cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in the southern Middle Tennessee region. “COVID-19 is spread from person to person via airborne droplets when an individual coughs, sneezes or talks and can linger in the air and on surfaces from minutes to hours depending on the setting,” says Chri...
By Patty Sellars, Legal Aid Society The COVID-19 pandemic has caused upheaval to the lives of almost everyone, but the effects have been most pronounced among lower-income people. In Tennessee, many residents who might have just been getting by, have found their work hours cut, or their positions eliminated entirely, since stay-at-home orders began in March. Emergency SNAP allotments went into effect in April and have been issued every month since. However, the Department of Human Services (DHS), which administers SNAP, has primarily...
