  • One Day at a Time

    Evelyn 'E.T.' Trevathan|Dec 15, 2022

By Evelyn Trevathan, Contributing Writer Well it is a cool, damp and rainy morning here in our little valley. It is not cold enough for us to have a fire going in the old wood heating stove but I have heard by the end of the week we may see a few flurries, of course that sounds good to me because I love to see it snow, just as long as it is just a little snow. The cats were really hungry this morning, they ate quick and have already went back to their warm beds. Bob has got the kitchen spotless clean and he left the coffee pot on for me to...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Dec 15, 2022

Sometimes we all forget what the true meaning of Christmas really is. It’s the birth date of our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. It’s also a time of giving thanks to those who have also touched our hearts. Tracie Lomax did just that tonight (December 10, 2022) with a wonderful dinner and dessert she brought to our home with love in her heart. The dinner was prepared by wonderful folks at Lomax Church of Christ. My wife of many years is now on hospice care and unable to go out anymore. I am a 24-7 home-care husband now. Not a problem because in...

  • World War II troops spent Christmas in the field

    Dec 15, 2022

By Tom Emery The men who fought, and won, World War II are part of the Greatest Generation. But during the war, their Christmases were not so great. Half a world away from home at holiday time, American troops were usually in the field, fighting in some of the war’s biggest battles. Though they made the best of Christmas, it was a lonely time both on the front and at home. Christmas in 1941 came just eighteen days after Pearl Harbor, so the first Yuletide during major American involvement came the next year. American forces in the South Pacific...

  • Tyrades

    Danny Tyree|Dec 15, 2022

Saint Nick wasn’t the only man in a red suit that magical Christmas season 50 years ago. On Saturday December 23, 1972, I walked from my house to Sharp’s Drive-In Market and splurged on four 20-cent comic books. One of my selections was heavily influenced by an ad appearing in DC Comics: “Coming in December…DC’s Christmas gift to you! Shazam is coming!” I could scarcely wait to rush home and open my copy of “Shazam!” #1. Unfortunately, my gut reaction upon seeing the interior artwork was, “What...

  • Christmas in Lincoln White House was low-key affair

    Dec 15, 2022

by Tom Emery Christmas in the White House in the 1860s was a far cry from the ornate displays of decor familiar to Americans today. During the Lincoln administration, the holiday was celebrated in low-key fashion. Celebrations of Christmas in those years were far less prevalent than today, and the White House was no exception. The first indoor Christmas tree at the White House did not appear until 1889, and the first outdoor tree lighting was not held until 1923. For President Lincoln, December 25 was often a working day. Those who did...
