  • Christmas Story: For the Man Who Hated Christmas

    Dec 23, 2020

It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past ten years. It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas. Oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it – overspending and the frantic running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and the dusting powder for Grandma – the gifts given in desperation because you couldn't think of anything else. Knowing he felt this...

  • On Santa's Team

    Dec 23, 2020

My grandma taught me everything about Christmas. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," jeered my sister. "Even dummies know that!" My grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her world-famous cinnamon buns. Grandma was home, and the buns...

  • Country life is a blessing

    Dec 23, 2020

It is a cold winter morning as I sit here with a cup of hot coffee and by a good warm fire, this old wood heater is sure doing a good job. We’ve had it a long time. I can smell the wood smoke as it drifts to the ground. I just heard that some wintry weather is coming in soon, I am ready for it. I got firewood stacked on the back porch and food on the shelves. I am blessed. I just heard our neighbor’s old John Deere tractor coming down their driveway. He has a bale of hay and he’s going to feed his cattle before the storm comes in. They hear...

  • What Happened Christmas Eve

    Dec 23, 2020

It was Christmas Eve and the frost fairies were busy getting ready for Christmas Day. First of all they spread the loveliest white snow carpet over the rough, bare ground; then they hung the bushes and trees with icicles that flashed like diamonds in the moonlight. Later on, they planned to draw beautiful frost pictures on the window panes, to surprise the little children in the morning. The stars shone brightly and the moon sent floods of light in every nook and corner. How could any one think of sleeping when there was such a glory outside!...

  • Gordonsburg/Little Swan News

    Dorothy Warf, Contributing Writer|Dec 23, 2020

I am wishing for a clear night so we can see the beautiful star that no one today has seen. The clouds keep moving in and out and the sun comes and goes, but hope it is clear. We have had some rain and cold temperatures and even some snow flurries and sleet in some areas, but not on the ground. The weather people think we might have a white Christmas. That would be nice, but also dangerous for those who are traveling, so be careful and stay safe. Those who are sick or shut-in and in need of prayers for whatever the need: William Barber, David...

Unfortunately, these activities can often lead to fire, with Christmas Day and Christmas Eve as two of the top days each year for home fires caused by cooking and candles. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages everyone to keep safety in mind in order to lessen the chance that a fire will disrupt their holiday celebrations. “December is a leading month for hom...
