Perhaps one reason I never get invited to New Year’s Eve parties is that I tend to overanalyze things. Take Baby New Year (a.k.a. “Bundle of White Male Joy”), for instance. Society’s reliance on this iconic tyke in editorial cartoons, greeting cards and advertising campaigns causes me to lose more sleep than the ball drop in Times Square. Most people blithely accept a half-naked, curfew-deprived newborn galivanting about the countryside unchaperoned; but I see it as one more troubling repercu...

We are experiencing some unusual weather for December but in Tennessee that is not uncommon. It has been warm enough to be out without a coat and that is why so many are having problems with allergies. We are thankful that we missed all the disasters that have plagued our nation and especially the southern states, the flood earlier this year that so devasted Waverly and then the tornadoes last week and the week before that caused so many deaths and so much damage to the areas where they struck. By the end of this week we will be entering a new...
Well it is a cool and foggy morning here in our little valley. It is not cold like it should be on the days right after Christmas but a little heat feels good. I don’t have a big fire going in the old wood heating stove, just a little heat to take the chill out. I have my cup of hot coffee, and the cats have had their breakfast. They really enjoy their bowl of warm milk and of course I always pet them and talk to them. Christmas is over and some folks are happy it is and some folks are sad, but we had a wonderful Christmas. All the kids were h...
