  • Life As Art:Impact of Photojournalism

    Elissa Tracy|Jul 18, 2024

It’s challenging to focus on topics like art, interior design, and pop culture in light of last Saturday’s Pennsylvania political rally and the attempted assassination of former President Trump. I vividly remember the attempt on President Ronald Reagan’s life—it happened on March 30, my birthday. I remember emotions of being scared, having just returned home from school to an empty house, watching the news alone. Back then, we lacked social media, video games were less intense, and the more violent TV shows were relegated to late-night slots....

Still a few thundershowers around the area but not over all the area, sometimes it rains in town and not one drop down on the creek and then it comes a shower with thunder and not a drop in town I guess we need to be glad for what we get since it is so dry. Those I know which are sick either at home, in nursing facilities or in the hospitals are: Kasey Baker, Colene Beasley, Linda Butler, Elizabeth Boggs, Bobby Carroll, Gertie Carroll, Spencer Clark, Nita Cottrel, Robert and Pat Dickson, Paula Dyer, Polly Edwards, Ophelia Green, Betty Hasty,...

Well it has already gotten warm and humid early this morning here in our little valley. It is a quiet morning, there is not many sounds and it is very quiet. The cats have had their breakfast and are laying here on the front porch, the front porch is always cool early in the mornings. Later up in the morning they will go and find a cooler spot to nap for the rest of the day. Bob is washing the breakfast dishes and I am enjoying the front porch. There are lots of hummingbirds at their feeders. We got a good rain the day before and this morning...

The Art of Small Space Design As urban areas grow more costly and dense, our living spaces often shrink. Even in larger homes, there’s usually a room that, awkwardly shaped or poorly utilized, becomes a mere storage space. Whether it’s furniture that’s too large or a shortage of space-saving ideas, these rooms frequently fail to serve any practical purpose. Think like a tiny home designer to maximize the functionality of these small spaces. The tiny home movement - popular for those downsizing, living off-grid, or constructing guest house...

Well it is a nice morning here in our little valley. I am sitting on the front porch swing and there is a nice breeze blowing. It is not as hot as it has been. The cats have really been enjoying this cooler weather, they are stretched out here on the porch taking their morning nap. Later when the day starts to warm up some more they will go and find a cool place to nap until supper time. The birds are singing and I am watching the neighbor’s cows grazing out in their pasture, everyone seems to be enjoying the little cooler weather. Last week w...

Drawing! Drawing! Drawing! From the first crayon scribbles of childhood to the finesse of adult sketches, drawing is a universal course waiting for every one of us. By grasping a pencil and exploring its angles, we begin to shape lines that evolve into the artistry of painting and beyond. Drawing is inherently mathematical; many everyday objects are composed of repetitive, evenly spaced elements. Math is problem solving, just as drawing is a tool for thought. Think of fences, ladders, door panels, and windows—each a canvas of symmetrical p...

  • Tyrades! What's a good age gap for couples?

    Danny Tyree|Jul 4, 2024

A recent news development has left some folks scandalized and others envious. (And still others grumbling, “I don’t need no stinking news developments! I’m too busy getting ready to vote!”) I’m speaking of the revelation that former New England Patriots coaching legend Bill Belichick (age 72) is dating 24-year-old beauty pageant contestant Jordon Hudson. (Please hold your fainting spells or “Attaboy!” outbursts until later.) This (and similar situations, including reports that 49-year-old L...

It is so hot and humid that there are no birds or anything out this morning The cats ate their breakfast early and have now gone to try and find a cool spot to nap. We finally got some rain and there is a little in the creek, but we need a lot more because it has been so dry. Goes without saying we are still very hot and dry; many have been playing in ball tournaments and it really hot especially if you can’t find some shade to sit in. the players have made it good even though it has been so hot but guess the heat doesn’t bother them as much as it does us older ones. My great grand daughter is playing with a team that has not lost a game as on Monday in the state tournament. They play today and then we will know where we go from here. Congratulations to this ball team and others as they play their games. Those I k...

  • Life as Art:For The Love Of JoeFest: A Real American Toy Convention

    Elissa Tracy|Jun 27, 2024

This past weekend in Augusta, Georgia, the 2024 JoeFest Toy and Comic Book Convention showcased over 300 vendors of toys, comic books, anime, novelties, pro artists, collectibles, and celebrities! Now, that’s a lot to see! Hohenwald’s very own toy collectible store, YoJoe Depot, was there to represent and be part of the 300-vendor party. Achieving Pop-culture status means your name becomes synonymous with something in our society, like Star Wars or Levi’s. GI Joe has accomplished this and then some. When Hasbro first launched the GI Joe toy lin...

  • Tyrades! Have you visited your 50th state yet?

    Danny Tyree|Jun 27, 2024

“I’ve been everywhere, man/I’ve been everywhere, man…” - as sung by Hank Snow. I was overjoyed to hear that one of my high school classmates and his wife recently completed their bucket-list project of visiting all 50 states. (Alas, one of the less-studious members of our class stopped agonizingly short of that milestone, declaring, “You can’t fool me! There are only 49 states, ever since scientists decided Pluto isn’t really a state.”) As I researched the 50-state accomplishment, I discovered t...

Well it is a very warm morning here in our little valley. Right now there is a little breeze blowing and it is comfortable out here on the front porch, but it is quickly getting humid. This whole month of June has felt like Summer but we are just now in the beginnings of Summer, we have got lots more hot days ahead of us. The cats were here early for their breakfast. They sure are smart they ate breakfast while it was still cool out and now that it is warming up they have gone to find a cool shady place to nap for the day. When it is hot like t...

Still very dry in our area and the severe dry has make fires more dangerous, if you plan on using fireworks during the coming July 4th celebration, please use caution and do not be in open fields where there is dry grass and trees and if you smoke, please do not toss cigarettes out the windows of your car, many forest fires have started this way. We really could use some rain and the weather people are saying we should get some. • Tyrades! Are you hopelessly confused about telephone etiquette?

“Don’t you dare call me without texting first!” blared a recent headline in the Wall Street Journal. Yes, forget about Taiwan and other potential hot spots; battle lines are being drawn over the divisive issue of modern telephone etiquette. (“Plenty of ink for the battle lines, since we didn’t use any codifying the unwritten rules of cellphone etiquette!”) Some combatants are merely miffed or startled (“The call is coming from inside your circle of friends!”) about receiving an unexpected pers...
