    Evelyn 'E.T.' Trevathan|Jun 20, 2024

Well it is a warm and almost hot, sunny morning here in our little valley. It has already been feeling like summertime. Here on our front porch there is always a little cool breeze blowing and during the hot Summer months it is comfortable out here in the mornings. The cats ate their breakfast early this morning and have now gone off to find themselves a cool place to nap for the day. Sometimes it is like they eat, drink and disappear. Bob always keeps fresh water set out for the cats. When it is hot like this or dry, animals need more water,...

  • Should a sense of humor be mandatory for fathers?

    Danny Tyree|Jun 13, 2024

Some fathers are entirely too serious. They’re paranoid about their children finding out that they had their own youthful indiscretions and regrettable choices. (“I don’t make mistakes. You can ask any of your six stepmoms.”) My late father ‘fessed up to his own errors in judgment, like when he was in the schoolyard and a classmate yelled to him from a second-story window to toss up some of the abundant hedge apples (a.k.a. Osage oranges) that littered the ground. Just as the classmate...

  • The Green Marvel of Philippe Starck

    Elissa Tracy|Jun 13, 2024

Architect Philippe Starck designed and completed the Unhex Nani Nani in 1989. This green copper-sheeted modern structure stands out on an otherwise ordinary street in the middle of Tokyo. The five-story office building, with commercial space at street level, was intended for Unhex, a construction company eager to project a distinctive image. The name “Nani nani” translates to “what is it?” in Japanese, a fitting title given the puzzled reactions to the verdigris metal-clad building. What truly makes this building unique, apart from its unconve...

    Evelyn 'E.T.' Trevathan|Jun 13, 2024

Well it is a beautiful morning here in our little valley. It is a perfect morning for sitting on the front porch and having coffee. The cats are enjoying the morning too. They had their breakfast and are now taking a nap. Yesterday Bobby filled up the bird feeders and this morning the birds are busy and happy also. There are a couple of squirrels under the old apple tree in the yard, they are enjoying the apples that have fallen off the tree. They are carrying some of the apples down near the creek, I guess they are beginning to stock up for Wi...

wind. The rain is good for the farmers’ crops and the gardens that many in the area grow. This past Saturday night we had a thunderstorm and it had some fierce lightening and thunder, it would rattle the windows as mom used to say, actually it was early Monday morning but there was no loss of power where we were. Those I know of who are sick either at home, in nursing facilities or in the hospitals are: Kasey Baker, Colene Beasley, Linda Butler, Elizabeth Boggs, Bobby Carroll, Gertie Carroll, Spencer Clark, Robert and Pat Dickson, Paula D...

  • Life As Art:Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

    Elissa Tracy|Jun 6, 2024

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall Mirrors have always played an intrinsic part in our history and mythical legends of beauty and vanity. They are essential, functional, and above all, irresistible, allowing us to see ourselves with imagination, mystery, and illusion. Mirrors play a significant role in our everyday lives of self-examination and are crucial in the design world (both residential and commercial) as decorative and functional elements in bathrooms, hallways, bedrooms, and as elective accents. By utilizing the reflection of light, mirrors ca...

  • Tyrades! Ready for the final Pat Sajak "Wheel"?

    Danny Tyree|Jun 6, 2024

June 7 will be a bittersweet day in TV history, as the final “Wheel of Fortune” hosted by Pat Sajak airs. Sajak announced his retirement plans a year ago, allowing himself time for a VICT_RY L_P, naming of a successor and cleaning all the spare bullion out of the sofa in the dressing room. “Wheel of Fortune” has been like comfort food or an oasis in a chaotic world, so millions of viewers are saddened by Sajak’s departure; but very few were truly caught off-guard by the announcement. The “Whee...

The weather has been rather mild, still with lots of rain, which is good for the gardens and crops that are growing in the area. The days have been rather hot and sometimes the humidity makes it worse with temperatures in the eighties. The nights have still been nice with temperatures in the fifties and sixties most of the time. Some in the area have been trying out the creeks in the area which are still very cold but don’t get much better even when the nights are warm. Those I know of who are sick either at home, in nursing facilities or in t...

    Evelyn 'E.T.' Trevathan|Jun 6, 2024

Well it is a cool and rainy morning here in our little valley. We do need this rain but it is too cool to sit on the porch. The cats were not in a hurry for their breakfast, they are sleeping in this morning. When the sun is shining and it is warm out, then they are sitting at the door waiting for breakfast. Last week was a good week, we worked outside and got a lot done. We got our yard mowed, it is growing so fast with all this rain. I have heard several people say their gardens are doing good. Pam and Rick got some squash and green onions...

Q.) Can you tell me a little bit about yourself? A.) My name is Becky King, and first of all I am a firm believer of Jesus Christ. He is my everything, and I would be nowhere without Him! I am so thankful for what He has brought me through and taught me throughout my life. I am a Lewis County alumni, graduating in 2017 (Go Panthers!). • Can the population implosion be stopped?

    Danny Tyree|May 30, 2024

“And when I die / and when I’m gone / there’ll be one child born, in this world / to carry on / to carry on.” The song written by Laura Nyro and most famously performed by Blood, Sweat & Tears may have been overly optimistic. According to the Wall Street Journal, the world is rapidly approaching a tipping point at which the birth rate won’t be enough to keep the population constant. Climate-change prophets are probably jumping for joy (“Darn! I expelled more carbon dioxide; should’ve s...

I would guess that many residents of Lewis County and Hohenwald were awoken by the ringing of the telephone in the early hours of Monday the 27th, it was the emergency service saying we were under a thunderstorm watch for a few hours. It did come a thunderstorm but now as severe as was predicted we had lots of thunder and lightning but no hail and not a lot of wind we did have lot of rain. Hope in your area it was also calm. I am glad we have this service to warm us of dangerous weather situations. Those I know of who are sick either at home,...

    Evelyn 'E.T.' Trevathan|May 30, 2024

Well it is a damp and cool morning here in our little valley. We had some thunder and rain here this morning before daylight. Now it looks like it is going to be a beautiful day. The sun is beginning to shine and it is getting warm, it is going to be another hot and muggy day. This has really been some unusual weather this Spring, I am wondering what Summer is going to be like. The cats are here and ready for their breakfast. They are always here about the same time every day, maybe they can tell time, Bobby says they have little Mickey Mouse...

  • Tyrades! Is it nice to fool Mather Nature?

    Danny Tyree|May 23, 2024

Yes, I was hunkered down paying rapt attention to the weather report on May 8 when an EF-3 tornado rampaged through a neighboring county. Understandably, I was intrigued by a May 11 “New York Post” article about a technological push to manipulate the weather. Eleven states already maintain “old school” programs of seeding clouds with silver iodide to generate precipitation; but around the world, weather wizards are brainstorming other tactics for dealing with droughts, flash floods and related...

Well it is a cool and cloudy morning here in our little valley. A light rain is falling and it is a little too damp to sit on the front porch. Even with the rain the cats were up and waiting on breakfast, but now that they have finished they have snuggled back down for a nap until the rain is over. Bob has finished washing the breakfast dishes and he is now enjoying his coffee. We sure have been having some unusual weather lately, lots of rain and a lot of hail. I can not ever remember times being like this, but everything is changing and I...

Once again last week, the weather has been a big influence on the area as Wednesday afternoon there was hail in some places about the size of a baseball. During the thunderstorm that brought the hail a large tree fell just below my house and several on Claude Carroll Rd and on Little Swan Creek toward highway 412 were without power for several hours. The power was restored thanks to MLEC at about eight pm but the internet and phones were out until Thursday about noon. There were lots of tree limbs and debris around the area and we were under a...

Well is a cool morning here in our little valley, it was 46 degrees early this morning. Now the sun is shining and it is warming back up fast. The cats were hungry this morning and all three of them were up and waiting on their breakfast. The birds are now singing and some are busy at the bird feeders. Bobby keeps the feeders full and the birds sure do enjoy them and we sure enjoy watching the birds, you would be amazed at all the different kinds of birds in our backyard. It has been a very busy and rough week. We sure have had some very...

  • Tyrades! Is "value" a dirty word?

    Danny Tyree|May 16, 2024

As I sit here admiring my 88-cent container of mustard, I can’t help feeling self-conscious. I know that restaurants advertise their “value menus” and retailers offer no-frills knockoffs of their glitziest products, but I keep picturing the corporate CEOs loathing such concessions as a necessary evil to appease the (ugh!) cheapskate rabble. (“I thought all the franchise owners got the memo to partner with Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and upsell customers the Eternally Happy Meal!”)...

The Art Of Window Display In the fast paced sphere of retail fashion, the primary goal is to sell stylish clothing and ensure customer satisfaction. This dance begins with the window display, an artful introduction to the store’s offerings designed to draw the customer inside. Much like pausing to peruse a restaurant’s menu before deciding to dine, the window display invites contemplation and entices entry. For many, these stores aren’t just shopping destinations but visual escapades, thanks to the artists behind these creative insta...

Pretty sure that Spring is here, it has been in the mid to upper eighties several days lately and even the nights have been warmer. The flowers are doing well, and many wildflowers have already bloomed and lost their blooms. We have had several thunder showers and many with heavy rain and even heavy thunder and lightning, which has hindered many of the ball games from being completed. Several softball and baseball teams were on the fields on Saturday along with Spring Fest which also suffered because of thunderstorms. Hope you didn’t get wet i...

Well it is a nice cool morning here in our little valley. Last night we heard rumbles of thunder and got a shower of rain. This morning everything is wet, but the grass is green and the flowers are blooming, everything liked the rain. The cats were up early this morning for their breakfast. They sure like this nice warmer weather, after they eat breakfast they find themselves a cool spot, usually on the porch and take naps for most of the day, unless they see us outside then they want us to pet them or go for a walk with them. This has been ano...
