  • The Mobile Artistry of Alexander Calder: Sculpting Movement and Elegance

    Elissa Tracy|Aug 31, 2023

Various types of art have the capacity to bring forth many types of emotions. Mobile art, in particular, can be described as happy, fun and magical. It suits all ages but its quite plausible that the initial image could be that of a mobile positioned over a babies crib, perhaps symbolizes ones earliest exposure to art itself. In the genre of art, where stagnant creations often dominate, Alexander Calder stands as a pioneer who challenged conventionality by introducing movement and dynamism into his sculptures. Renowned for his innovative...

  • Baldness: is not parting such sweet sorrow?

    Danny Tyree|Aug 31, 2023

Yes, nearly 60 years after discovering “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” I still watch the classic sitcom; but some of the punchlines haven’t held up particularly well. Or maybe I’m the one who hasn’t held up so well. You may recall that gag writer Buddy Sorrell (played by Morey Amsterdam) always made longsuffering “Alan Brady Show” producer Mel Cooley the foil of his rapid-fire baldness jokes. The zingers were HI-larious -- until my early thirties when I abruptly discovered that my luxurious hai...

Well it is a very hot and humid morning here in our little valley, it is very still and quiet, there are not many sounds just some crows off in the distance. There is a little breeze blowing and we are getting a few sprinkles of rain. The cats have had their breakfast and are laying here on the porch resting. Bob has finished the dishes and the kitchen is spotless. A little patch of cooler weather is coming, and maybe by the time you all are reading this it will be much cooler, but right now the long range forecast is calling for it to warm...

  • The Positivity of the Concrete Jungle: LA LA Land's Art and Culture

    Elissa Tracy|Aug 24, 2023

Returning to Los Angeles for a visit after residing in a small town is akin to plunging into an icy bath – simultaneously shocking, invigorating, and slightly stinging. It’s arguable that big cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago each possess their pros and cons. However, in this article, we’ll focus on the positive aspects of Los Angeles. For some reason, I’ve always found beauty amid the grit. Genuine graffiti, not the stylized graffiti art of today, has captivated me due to its layered stories and the fact that they can be obliter...

The law requires the state coordinator of elections to certify to the county election...

  • What shall we say about homeschooling?

    Danny Tyree|Aug 24, 2023

I realize such headgear has fallen out of style in our self-esteem-obsessed culture, but maybe I should belatedly don a dunce cap. You see, one of my first columns (nearly 25 years ago) was a snarky dismissal of the nascent homeschooling movement. I know at least two nice families who are homeschooling this year, so I wish to offer my apologies. Granted, I, my wife, our son, our parents and our siblings were all products of the traditional public school system. (I didn’t use the term ...
