Well it is a warm and humid morning here in our little valley. Here on the front porch there is a little breeze blowing but it is warm. The cats were here to eat early this morning, I think they knew that it was going to be hot later. When it gets hot they go and find a cool place. We keep plenty of fresh water out for them and there is usually a little water in the creek for other animals. There probably are a lot of animals that are tied up and can not get to water or shade. We still have not got enough rain, all we have mostly been getting...

July 02, 1953 The main news for the week was that many Hohenwald businesses planned to be closed for the Independence Day holiday. The newspaper reported, “From all indications Hohenwald will be a quiet city on Saturday, July 4th… If you will need groceries over the weekend you had better lay them in store Thursday or Friday, for they will be closed as tight as a jug Saturday…all garages will be closed also, so keep this in mind.” Jesper Jensen was serving in Europe with the U. S. Air Force....
When I was a young adult living under my parents’ roof, my late father always made sure I had Beanee Weenees, Vienna sausage, potted meat and other such snacks to take to my graveyard-shift factory job. Of course, I appreciated the display of paternal love; but Chris van Tulleken, author of “Ultra-Processed People,” would probably be aghast. Granted, van Tulleken is not alone in sounding alarm bells about today’s ultra-processed foods -- groceries characterized by arm-long lists of additiv...
This past week Lewis County Cub Scouts were introduced to rudimentary cardboard slingshots that fired pompoms, in preparation for constructing their very own stick and rubber band versions that could be used for target practice. The scouts were given a brief firearms safety presentation to ensure that they understood that they should never aim at people, animals or anything that could be broken by accident. They eagerly completed their slingshots and went outside to fire their non-lethal...

As one explores Lewis and Maury County, it becomes increasingly evident that growth and new construction, as well as add-ons and renovation projects, are in full swing. Engaging in any form of construction or renovation inevitably leads to extensive to-do lists for every room in a home. Often, these lists resemble checkerboard roadmaps, marked with highlighted words, arrows, asterisks and red inked crossed-out items that may not align with the available budget. The renovation wish list can sometimes appear overwhelming, but the very essence of...

Well it is a beautiful morning here in our little valley. It is very quiet here on the front porch. The cats are taking a nap, they ate their breakfast and went back to bed. The neighbor’s cows are grazing in their pasture and I just saw a squirrel in a tree here in the front yard. Bob is washing the breakfast dishes and I am having my coffee. I heard an airplane go over and even it seemed to have a lonesome sound, it was not very loud and it sounded far away. I am enjoying every minute of this quiet time, but I know outside of our little v...
