Well it is another peaceful morning here in our little valley, it is very still and quiet this morning. There is a cool little breeze blowing across the front porch, but it is very comfortable. These are probably some of the last warm mornings that we will be able to sit out on the porch, soon it will start turning chilly and then it will be too cold for us to sit out on the porch in the mornings. Soon in the mornings we will be having big frosts, and all the tree leaves will change colors and then they will start falling off. The cats were up...

“Hey, Jo, I absolutely love this season. Fall is my favorite and my best. October is peak fall don’t you think?” I love the idea of October! Imagine not having it? As Anne says, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. Let’s not skip from September to November. Don’t you love seeing the changing trees? They give me a thrill! I’m going to decorate my room with them.” - Anne Shirley, Anne of Green Gables So, inspired by autumn and the spirit of Anne Shirley, I have come up with a few ideas to help you enjoy October! Bake an Anne-I...

    Danny Tyree|Oct 17, 2024

My handy-dandy “column topic radar” lit up when I encountered an internet article called “12 Phrases You’re Using That Make You Sound Unprofessional.” (This is not to be confused with the equally intriguing online article titled “12 Phrases That Would’ve Been 13 Phrases If That %$#* Black Cat Hadn’t Revved Up My Superstitious Streak.”) The author helpfully pointed out a number of utterances that can make you appear immature, unfocused, unhelpful, inflexible, whiney, too casual or too SOMETHING...

Well it is a beautiful Fall morning here in our little valley. It is still warm enough this morning to sit out on the front porch, but it will not be many more days until it will be too cold outside and then we will be sitting near the old wood heating stove. We are still enjoying watching a few hummingbirds at their feeders, somebody told me they normally leave around the last of August but this year they are still here in October. I guess the weather has changed over the last few years. The cats were here early this morning for their...

Definitely has been like a fall week, the leaves are really falling and could partly be because we have been so dry. The night temperatures have been in the upper fifties and low sixties. Those I know which are sick either at home, in nursing facilities or in the hospitals are: Kasey Baker, Colene Beasley, Linda Butler, Elizabeth Boggs, Cathey Carroll, Gertie Carroll, Pam James Carroll, Spencer Clark, Nita Cottrel, Robert and Pat Dickso...

Did you know… “That dogs have an incredible sense of hearing? They hear at much higher frequencies than people. Science based research indicates their frequency ranges are much greater than humans. Dogs hear between 67-45,000 Hz and humans hear between 64-23,000 Hz. Dogs like humans hear best at 4,000Hz, and they can zero in on where the sound is coming from by moving their ears and comparing the time delay between them”! So, there is no need to holler at your best friend1”... “he may be listening to something else, and needs to determine...

The past week has been a terrible week for storms and rain, in many areas of the southern United States there has been lots of damage from the hurricanes that came onto the land. There was also the loss of many lives and much damage to buildings, homes, roads and many other things. We pray for all those in the areas where these storms struck. Even with all the rain that fell in the area the creeks never got up, I guess it was because we were so low on water levels from the drought during the last several weeks. Those I know which are sick...

Well it is a cool and windy morning here in our little valley. We sure have been getting some good and much needed rain, there has not been no real heavy downpours but steady and slow rain. Even the creeks are starting to get water in them. With the rain, wind and cooler temperatures it sure has felt more and more like Fall. It was a little cool last night so I put the cats a small blanket out and they were snuggled down into it this morning. There were not as many hummingbirds at their feeders this morning, maybe it is because of the cooler...

  • Tyrades! What's the lowdown on your town's downtown?

    Danny Tyree|Oct 3, 2024

My parents used to talk about the county’s farmers streaming into town on Saturday and shopping until midnight. From my own childhood, I still remember Petula Clark’s then-new song “Downtown” blaring from the radio at my hometown’s first Dollar General Store (located about a block from the public square). During junior high, I sketched a map of all the businesses and landmarks surrounding the courthouse. (You’re right; that venture should have been a genuine chick magnet, but somehow I g...

“Hey, Jo, I have been worried about sending my children to school, with all the threats out there” Have you looked into the school’s safety policy? It might help to know what measures are in place, like security systems, lock down, drills, or communication plan for emergencies. If you’re unsure, reaching out to the school or attending a meeting can give you a clearer idea of how they’re working to keep students safe. Sometimes, understanding the steps being taken, can ease some of the worry. “In loco parentis” means that when kids are at s...

Well it is a very quiet and peaceful morning here in our little valley. I know there is a lot of trouble everywhere you look, but as I sit here on my front porch and watch the neighbor’s cows grazing peacefully and the humming birds enjoying their feeders and the cats enjoying the warm sunshine, I am so thankful and I know I am blessed. Fall is here and soon we will have real cooler weather. I think the humming birds are almost ready to leave, they seem to be eating as much as they can, they are getting ready for their long trip South. E...

Autumn is the best time of the year. (Sorry, Summer.) It’s the season of colorful leaves and football games and apple orchards and haunted houses and cool, crisp sweater weather. It can also be the season of kindness—if we stop buying wool. Sheep are gentle individuals who, like all living beings, feel pain and fear. But in the wool industry, they’re treated like nothing more than textile-producing machines, genetically manipulated to grow an unnatural amount of wool. Since the shearing process is driven by profit rather than compassion, it’s...

The cats were here early this morning to eat their breakfast, now they have snuggled down and they are taking their cat naps. I didn’t realize a recent CNN story would attempt making me feel guilty about my annual father-son bonding ritual. Each summer Gideon and I cut a series of radio commercials for my day-job employer (the local farmers cooperative), with the intention of having a little fun and, well, SELLING some stuff. (Kids, don’t try this at home. No, seriously. The radio station insinuated the recordings we did at home circa 2011 exhibited the acoustic qualities of a dying calf in a hail storm, so we hav...

First, THANK YOU! In response to last week’s words, several sent messages, others sent pictures of themselves sitting in their yard, “Being Weird!” I love it! So, I’ve been thinking... It’s OK to try, only to find out something didn’t work. How else would you know if it does or doesn’t? Yes, there is that whole, “learning from others, so you don’t have to learn the hard way” thing. But, that seems only to work logistically. Examples of this are: “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey” and/or...

“Hey, Jo, Are people allowed to fly drones over private property?” In the U.S., drone laws regarding flying over private property are still evolving, but here are some important issues, you might want to keep in mind: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) controls airspace above 400 feet, and below that, it’s considered navigable airspace, where drones can legally fly. However, drones must comply with FAA regulations, including not flying recklessly or invading privacy. While Flying over private property is generally legal, if the drone...

The last couple of weeks the area has gotten some much needed rain, with some thundershowers with wind and rain and during the fair rain a couple of nights and some events were cancelled on Thursday and Saturday nights. The temperatures are still in the sixties and low seventies at night but up above eighty during the afternoon. Well it is a beautiful almost Fall morning here in our little valley. We had a few days of a little cooler temps and this morning there is a nice breeze blowing. We got a good rain the other night and it sure helped everything, after a good rain everything always seems fresh and clean. We still need a lot more rain though, our grass is still really dry. The cats are really enjoying this morning, they like the cooler weather better. They do not care for hot weather, when it gets really hot then they just want to sleep during the day. The humming...
