Got some rain along with a thunderstorm, not serious but had lightning and thunder and rain. We are very thankful for the rain as I know the animals in the wild are because their food supply has suffered with it being so dry. The temperatures have been like fall of the year and the leaves are really falling, I guess because it has been so dry. Mornings have been in the low forties and then back up to eighty during the day. Those I know which are sick either at home, in nursing facilities or in the hospitals are: Kasey Baker, Colene Beasley,...
“People Think It’s Weird...” ...to love the earth. They do, and I have unknowingly tested it. On days when the weather speaks to my soul (yes, I know how “hippie” that sounds), I take a straw mat out to the driveway, lay it out, and lie there in the warm sun. Personally, I’d rather sweat bullets any day as opposed to the slightest chill. As the sun refuels me for the day (body and mind), I enjoy the songbirds singing in the trees to each other across the yard and/or neighborhood. I am in awe o...
“Hey, Jo, “Are our water systems protected? What are some ways we can prepare for cyber attacks and EMP threats?” As the threats to our critical infrastructure continue to grow, it’s important that we prepare to protect one of our most essential resources; our water supply. Recent warnings have highlighted the risks posed by cyber attacks and electromagnetic pulses (EMPs), both of which could disrupt water systems and threaten public safety. Let’s talk about some things we can do to safeguard our water systems from these potential dangers.....
One year (don’t ask me which, because..as if), I wanted to do the Fairest of the Fair Beauty Pageant. I had never done one, nor have since, but the memories of “that one time” have stuck with me throughout my life. Growing up in thrift stores (my parents owned and ran them), I always had everything and little to nothing at the same time. I also had the privilege of meeting thousands of people, one of those being Henrietta Weaver. Through the years, she sewed several of my thrifted re-de...
BILL BATES Q.) Can you tell me a little bit about yourself? A.) I am a pretty laid back guy. I grew up in Lobelville, Tennessee (God's Country) and have lived in Hohenwald for 33 years. I am married to Candi Bates and together we have 7 kids, 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. I have been in the banking business all my life. I enjoy golfing, spending time outdoors, being with my family and love all things sports. Q.) What is one of your fondest childhood memories? A.) It's hard to choose...
Well it is a beautiful morning here in our little valley. We had a good rain and everything looks fresh and clean. The colors on the trees are now more brighter oranges, yellows and reds, it sure is beginning to look more like Fall. I think we are all ready for Fall. Now that it has cooled up a little, even my coffee is tasting better. The cats were up early this morning and waiting on their breakfast. The birds are singing and they are enjoying the fresh air. There is a couple of squirrels in the yard, they seem to be looking for food. Every...
“Hey, Jo, I have noticed a lot of trash and broken glass accumulating in the streets. Do you know when the street sweeper is scheduled to run again?” The City of Hohenwald operates the street sweeper every Monday at 4:30 AM. Until next time...stay curious and keep smiling. - Jo...
The Appeal of Bavarian Culture: Munich Last week, I embarked on a journey to Munich, Germany, with a dreamy notion of visiting Hohewalde, our sister town in Germany. However, after doing some research, I realized that Hohewalde was too far from Munich to explore within the limited time I had. Moreover, Hohewalde is more of a scattered farming area than a destination for sightseeing and leisurely strolls. Despite this, as a first-time visitor to Germany, I found myself thinking of our little town often. I quickly fell in love with Bavarian cultu...
For decades, my mother (who was a veterinarian’s assistant during my childhood) gloated about her visit to my third-grade classroom. The dignified Mrs. Shelton accidentally transposed some numbers and Mom quickly corrected her for stating the normal human body temperature is 96-point-8. (With the proliferation of true-crime podcasts, it seems today the normal human body temperature is “room.” But I digress.) And I fondly remember wandering through corn mazes with my son’s elementary school...
We finally had some rain in the area on Friday, and again on Saturday and Sunday which is very welcome, but every little bit helps as dry as it is now, think it was said that it has been over sixty years since it has been this dry in our county. Some are having issues with water getting low, and ponds going dry, and having to haul water from other places, and if we do not get more rain soon there will probably be more water problems. Those I know which are sick either at home, in nursing facilities or in the hospitals are: Kasey Baker, Colene...
“Hey, Jo, Where can the public find the Lewis County 10 year road plan?” Check out tn.gov/tdot/build-with-us. The 10 Year Project Plan is detailed on the website. Until next time...Stay curious and keep smiling. - Jo...
Well it is a very cool and quiet morning here in our little valley. The cats have had their breakfast and are taking a nap. I am enjoying my coffee. It will be Fall soon but these cool mornings already feel a little like Fall. Some of the trees are changing color but that is mostly from the dry and hot weather. Our yard has not really needed mowing in the last few weeks. There is still not much rain in the forecast. All the animals are probably looking for water, most of the creeks that normally have water in them are dry. One morning I was...
My bachelor Uncle Vernon refused to make out a last will and testament. Twenty-one years ago, he passed away unexpectedly. That left his beloved (but decrepit) English Shepherd dog Fred in a pickle. Luckily, my mother volunteered to adopt Fred and care for him in his final years. Things haven’t always worked out that smoothly for pets. According to the Wall Street Journal, it has taken automated prompts by businesses such as Trust & Will (the online estate-planning service) to remind clueless p...
Well it is a quiet and peaceful morning here in our little valley, it is so comfortable sitting out here on the front porch. We got a little rain last night and I heard some thunder. The rain on the roof sure sounded good and we are so thankful for any rain we get. This morning the birds are singing again and the neighbor’s cows are grazing on the wet grass, I think everyone is thankful for the rain. The cats have had their breakfast and are now out in the yard chasing butterflies’ and each other. There is a couple of really young squ...
The temperatures have been in the low sixties in the early morning for the last few days and that is good for me anyway. “Hey, Jo, Will there be shade replacement for cutting all the trees down at the park - Was there a community vote on cutting all the shade trees down?” The park board voted on the cutting down of the trees due to safety hazards and concerns about the tree roots cutting into the nearby shed buildings. City officials are set to meet with an engineering team within the next 2-3 weeks to discuss the development of a new park. The meeting will focus on the project’s phases, including plans for shading to improve visitor comfort. “More detaile...
I’m sure the summer break will fly by faster than the drone my son Gideon has been maneuvering. Gideon recently received his bachelor’s degree in mechatronics engineering and -- after a short breather -- will plunge into the graduate program in engineering management. My wife and I are proud of his achievement, especially since our involvement grew to be more about food, lodging and grant applications and less about homework assistance. Yes, his oppressive courses in calculus, linear algebra and statistics were soon “above our pay grade.” Sure,...
As careful as you may be, you will make mistakes. Although it’s not possible to live mistake free, there are effective strategies you can use to recover from your mistakes. Let’s start by considering basic causes of mistakes. You are impatient and act too quickly. You lack knowledge or expertise. You don’t have enough information to make a sound decision. You make a decision based on wrong information. Regardless of the cause, you need to recover from your mistakes. Once you have recovered, you can identify and address the cause. The diffe...

“Hey, Jo, What is that new playground equipment beside Hope Hohenwald? Is it for the public?” It is a small public park funded by a Tennessee state grant called the Healthy Built Environment Grant. The park is accessible for everyone, including those in wheelchairs. It has a platform where kids in wheelchairs can transfer and play. The climbing structures have sensory elements for sound, sight, and touch. A fence built by Kevin King and Bermuda grass will be added, along with a picnic table that’s wheelchair accessible. There will also be tw...
“Hey, Jo, Do you have any tips to transition into a peaceful back to school routine?” I always say “Fail to prepare, Prepare to fail.” ...Here are some useful tips that you can apply to help stay calm and positive to set the tone for you and your child’s day. Lay out clothes, pack lunches, and prepare school bags the night before. Stick to a sleep/wake routine. Be consistent with the same bedtime every night and wake-up time in the morning. Limit morning screens and devices to prevent distractions. Offer a simple and healthy breakfast...
The rhythm-and-blues-tinged 1962 Ray Charles album “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music.” John Travolta’s mechanical-bull-riding adventures in the 1980 film “Urban Cowboy.” The star-making 1990 “No Fences” album by Garth Brooks. The 2005 Country Music Association Awards show held in Madison Square Garden rather than Nashville. These were all milestones that increased the visibility of country music beyond hardcore fans. Unfortunately, casual country listeners can be as fickle as a h...
In the last week or so we have had several showers pop up during the day and night which has added rain to help alleviate the lack we have had most of the late summer. We appreciate the rain which not only helps the pastures, yards, and gardens which are still producing, but also washes all the vegetation and cleans the air. Those I know which are sick either at home, in nursing facilities or in the hospitals are: Kasey Baker, Colene Beasley, Linda Butler, Elizabeth Boggs, Gertie Carroll, Spencer Clark, Nita Cottrel, Robert and Pat Dickson, Pau...
Well it is a quiet and peaceful morning here in our little valley. Right now it is really comfortable and it has not gotten real humid yet. This morning we did have a little fog but not as much as we have been having, lately on some mornings the fogs have been real heavy. The cats were sitting at the door and waiting for their breakfast. They are always on time, I think they know what time it is, Bobby says that they have little Mickey Mouse wrist watches. The hummingbirds have been busy at their feeders. Bobby has been making up feed for them...
The inception of wallpaper dates back to ancient civilizations, both Egypt and China’s early versions of wallpaper included hand-painted scenes on rice paper or silk, showcasing intricate patterns and landscapes. The Victorian era, saw a surge in wallpaper popularity. Wallpapers from this period were characterized by complicated elaborate patterns, vibrant colors, and thick textures, often mimicking textiles or featuring floral and ornamental motifs. In current design trends, there’s been a revival of murals and wallpaper, blending into wha...
