“Hey, Jo, I have noticed a lot of trash and broken glass accumulating in the streets. Do you know when the street sweeper is scheduled to run again?” The City of Hohenwald operates the street sweeper every Monday at 4:30 AM. Until next time...stay curious and keep smiling. - Jo...

The Appeal of Bavarian Culture: Munich Last week, I embarked on a journey to Munich, Germany, with a dreamy notion of visiting Hohewalde, our sister town in Germany. However, after doing some research, I realized that Hohewalde was too far from Munich to explore within the limited time I had. Moreover, Hohewalde is more of a scattered farming area than a destination for sightseeing and leisurely strolls. Despite this, as a first-time visitor to Germany, I found myself thinking of our little town often. I quickly fell in love with Bavarian cultu...

  • Tyrades! Does your school system appreciate "Venmo moms"?

    Danny Tyree|Sep 5, 2024

For decades, my mother (who was a veterinarian’s assistant during my childhood) gloated about her visit to my third-grade classroom. The dignified Mrs. Shelton accidentally transposed some numbers and Mom quickly corrected her for stating the normal human body temperature is 96-point-8. (With the proliferation of true-crime podcasts, it seems today the normal human body temperature is “room.” But I digress.) And I fondly remember wandering through corn mazes with my son’s elementary school...

We finally had some rain in the area on Friday, and again on Saturday and Sunday which is very welcome, but every little bit helps as dry as it is now, think it was said that it has been over sixty years since it has been this dry in our county. Some are having issues with water getting low, and ponds going dry, and having to haul water from other places, and if we do not get more rain soon there will probably be more water problems. Those I know which are sick either at home, in nursing facilities or in the hospitals are: Kasey Baker, Colene...

Well it is a very cool and quiet morning here in our little valley. The cats have had their breakfast and are taking a nap. I am enjoying my coffee. It will be Fall soon but these cool mornings already feel a little like Fall. Some of the trees are changing color but that is mostly from the dry and hot weather. Our yard has not really needed mowing in the last few weeks. There is still not much rain in the forecast. All the animals are probably looking for water, most of the creeks that normally have water in them are dry. One morning I was...

  • Tyrades! Did you remember your pets in your will?

    Danny Tyree|Aug 29, 2024

My bachelor Uncle Vernon refused to make out a last will and testament. Twenty-one years ago, he passed away unexpectedly. That left his beloved (but decrepit) English Shepherd dog Fred in a pickle. Luckily, my mother volunteered to adopt Fred and care for him in his final years. Things haven’t always worked out that smoothly for pets. According to the Wall Street Journal, it has taken automated prompts by businesses such as Trust & Will (the online estate-planning service) to remind clueless p...

Well it is a quiet and peaceful morning here in our little valley, it is so comfortable sitting out here on the front porch. We got a little rain last night and I heard some thunder. The rain on the roof sure sounded good and we are so thankful for any rain we get. This morning the birds are singing again and the neighbor’s cows are grazing on the wet grass, I think everyone is thankful for the rain. The cats have had their breakfast and are now out in the yard chasing butterflies’ and each other. There is a couple of really young squ...

“Hey, Jo, Will there be shade replacement for cutting all the trees down at the park - Was there a community vote on cutting all the shade trees down?” The park board voted on the cutting down of the trees due to safety hazards and concerns about the tree roots cutting into the nearby shed buildings. City officials are set to meet with an engineering team within the next 2-3 weeks to discuss the development of a new park. The meeting will focus on the project’s phases, including plans for shading to improve visitor comfort. “More detaile...

  • Tyrades! Have you hugged an engineer lately?

    Aug 22, 2024

I’m sure the summer break will fly by faster than the drone my son Gideon has been maneuvering. Gideon recently received his bachelor’s degree in mechatronics engineering and -- after a short breather -- will plunge into the graduate program in engineering management. My wife and I are proud of his achievement, especially since our involvement grew to be more about food, lodging and grant applications and less about homework assistance. Yes, his oppressive courses in calculus, linear algebra and statistics were soon “above our pay grade.” Sure,...

As careful as you may be, you will make mistakes. Although it’s not possible to live mistake free, there are effective strategies you can use to recover from your mistakes. Let’s start by considering basic causes of mistakes. You are impatient and act too quickly. You lack knowledge or expertise. You don’t have enough information to make a sound decision. You make a decision based on wrong information. Regardless of the cause, you need to recover from your mistakes. Once you have recovered, you can identify and address the cause. The diffe...

“Hey, Jo, What is that new playground equipment beside Hope Hohenwald? Is it for the public?” It is a small public park funded by a Tennessee state grant called the Healthy Built Environment Grant. The park is accessible for everyone, including those in wheelchairs. It has a platform where kids in wheelchairs can transfer and play. The climbing structures have sensory elements for sound, sight, and touch. A fence built by Kevin King and Bermuda grass will be added, along with a picnic table that’s wheelchair accessible. There will also be tw...

  • Tyrades! Is country music cool again?

    Danny Tyree|Aug 1, 2024

The rhythm-and-blues-tinged 1962 Ray Charles album “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music.” John Travolta’s mechanical-bull-riding adventures in the 1980 film “Urban Cowboy.” The star-making 1990 “No Fences” album by Garth Brooks. The 2005 Country Music Association Awards show held in Madison Square Garden rather than Nashville. These were all milestones that increased the visibility of country music beyond hardcore fans. Unfortunately, casual country listeners can be as fickle as a h...

In the last week or so we have had several showers pop up during the day and night which has added rain to help alleviate the lack we have had most of the late summer. We appreciate the rain which not only helps the pastures, yards, and gardens which are still producing, but also washes all the vegetation and cleans the air. Well it is a quiet and peaceful morning here in our little valley. Right now it is really comfortable and it has not gotten real humid yet. This morning we did have a little fog but not as much as we have been having, lately on some mornings the fogs have been real heavy. The cats were sitting at the door and waiting for their breakfast. They are always on time, I think they know what time it is, Bobby says that they have little Mickey Mouse wrist watches. The hummingbirds have been busy at their feeders. Bobby has been making up feed for them...

  • Life as Art:Hand-Painted Wallpaper: Interior Portraits

The inception of wallpaper dates back to ancient civilizations, both Egypt and China’s early versions of wallpaper included hand-painted scenes on rice paper or silk, showcasing intricate patterns and landscapes. The Victorian era, saw a surge in wallpaper popularity. Wallpapers from this period were characterized by complicated elaborate patterns, vibrant colors, and thick textures, often mimicking textiles or featuring floral and ornamental motifs. In current design trends, there’s been a revival of murals and wallpaper, blending into wha...

Letter to the Editor It’s well-known that olive oil and other plant fats are healthier than butter. Recent comprehensive research of previous studies confirms this fact and shows that choosing plant fats over butter significantly reduces the risk of serious diseases. So let’s ditch butter—and all animal-derived ingredients—for our health, the planet, and animals. Cows, like humans, produce milk to nourish their young—not for another species to make butter. But on today’s factory farms, cows are artificially inseminated on a device the industr...

Letter to the Editor Rags or riches, camels and needles. So, here we stand on the edge of a great precipice, each party leaning forward, well over their skies. Who will be the first to fall and who will land on their feet? While both think they have the saving answer, the “snow” continues to pile up. Whose boots are wide enough to hold them up on top, or will 10 penny stilettoes poke holes causing them to melt down? Whichever the case, perhaps we should put aside our communication devices, sit quietly in a dark room, until we hear an ind...

View Point. While some keep pointing in one direction, others look forward to their point of correction deceiving their good points to be a sign of perfection falling from the grace of our Father’s protection. Before those untimely and awkward setbacks, they fostered a notion they were on the right track then missing the point from their lack of understanding. Good furtune came down from their own poor planning. Never dreaming the good times would come and go. Leaving them pointlessly running to and fro, some want to control humanities span, b...

In reference to the current event “show.” What’s the infraction? Why is the first court case titled “hush money?” She didn’t “hush!” Will she be required to pay it all back? Does the “statute of limitations” apply to covering that? An analogy. How many citizens, among others, mimic history’s “Barabas callers” and how many are under the innocent column? “Well, we don’t have to be, we’re not in charge of what’s important!” Then why would it be important to hear your opinion? “We have a right to speak!” But should we when there’s nothing positive...

The recent school board meeting raises major red flags for our county. As a county commissioner and someone who has been apart of school board and city council meetings, I have never seen any of these bodies of government post 4-5 signs during a public meeting that essentially read if you speak out or cause a disruption we can charge you with a misdemeanor. At the county level and from my involvement with the city council as well, we are always welcome to public opinion and citizen concerns. I feel as a citizen and elected official it is a...
