Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898

Walt Thompson

Walton "Walt" Kirk Thompson, of Hohenwald, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at the Lewis County Nursing and Rehab at the age of 77.

He was born in Pleasantville on August 30, 1942 to the late Walter and Mary Lou (Wiggs) Thompson. He married the love of his life, Sandra (Sharp), on December 21, 1963. They previously celebrated 56 years of marriage. Together they share a daughter, Sherri aka Crissy.

He was an independent salesman, working for many companies throughout his life. He enjoyed camping and fishing. Many memories were made with his friends, Charles Dye, Terry Cherry and Elmer Adair along with many other friends. He loved sports in general, supporting the LA Dodgers and Tennessee Vols. He was a part of the "Rocky Top Ramblers" which consisted of 14 motor homes, who rambled everywhere supporting their Tennessee Vols. Walt's wishes were to be rolled out of the funeral home with "Rocky Top" playing in the background, and so his wishes were honored.

Walt was commonly mistaken throughout the state and country as Conway Twitty, people would often approach him and ask him for his autograph, when he would sign "Walt Thompson" people would walk away disappointed or would often ask why he signed that name. It's told that his friends, especially Yogi, didn't make the situation any better, often calling him Conway in public. People in Hohenwald would often brag about seeing "Conway" in Hohenwald, only to be told it was Sandra's husband, Walt.

He was also known to have a heart of gold, wanting to help anybody and everybody regardless of their situation he wanted to help anybody in need. He was a member of the Lomax Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and oversaw the benevolence. He was also a big supporter of Mid-South Youth Camp in Henderson, where he volunteered yearly helping with the fish fry. He always said he was the only one who knew how to mix the fish meal. In recent years he pulled some of the young men together from the Lomax Church and taught them how to "properly" mix the meal, telling them he wouldn't always be around.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lewis County Cancer Victims Fund, a calling and organization that is very near and dear to his and Sandra's heart.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Sandra Thompson; daughter, Sherri (Crissy) Samide (Eric) of Franklin; sisters, Mary Ann Carter and Marla Thompson; two grandchildren, Matt and Andrew; and soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Britton.

Service was held on Sunday, January 12, 2010, 3 p.m., in the chapel of McDonald Funeral Home with Donnie Debord officiating, other participants included Yogi Spears and Donald Duncan.
