Local health officials respond to Coronavirus

If you haven't heard by now, Coronavirus, or COVID-19, has hit the Volunteer State. Information on this "crisis" is being pumped through news and media faster than we can keep our hands off of our faces. Here's what some of our Lewis County facilities are doing to prepare for the onslaught of germs.

"Our team met to review our Emergency Preparedness Plan. We are working with our custodial staff to provide extra sanitation efforts that includes extra cleaning of high contact areas as well as other parts of the school," said Sasha Powers, Coordinated School Health Supervisor.

If you visit a relative at the nursing home be prepared to answer a few questions. You may be required to check-in and out.

"We are monitoring the situation closely as it evolves to ensure we are taking every possible measure to protect those in our care," said Dana Coleman, speaking on behalf of AHC senior living communities.

Maury Regional Health has released visitation guidelines and limitations due to the outbreak. "We appreciate the public serving as our partner to help protect our patients and caregivers from the spread of viruses," said Maury Regional Health CEO Alan Watson.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following tips to ensure personal health:

- Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

- If you are sick with flu symptoms, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germ spread this way.

- Cough into the sleeve of your shirt or use tissues that are properly disposed of after use.
