State Representative Seat to be hotly contested in August

Three Republicans and one Democrat are seeking the position of State of Tennessee House of Representatives 71st District in the August 6, 2020 election.

Democrat Christi M. Rice of Waynesboro will be running against Republicans which include incumbent David “Coach” Byrd of Waynesboro, Austin Carroll of Hohenwald and Garry Welch of Savannah.

District 71 consists of Hardin, Lewis, Wayne and part of Lawrence Counties.

Members of the Tennessee House of Representatives serve two-year terms and are not subject to term limits. Tennessee legislators assume office the 15th of January following the election.

Others running for election on the state side are Gregory D. Hanners seeking the position of Democrat State Executive Committeeman and incumbent Joey Hensley seeking the State of Tennessee Senate for the 28th District, Giles, Lawrence, Lewis, Maury, Perry and Wayne Counties.

Candidates qualifying in the Lewis County election are: Assessor of Property - incumbent Travis R. Hinson opposed by Billy “Bishop” Meek Jr.; Commissioner of Highways - incumbent Joyce Holt opposed by Richie L. Carroll.

Districts 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9 of the Lewis County School Board will be filled. Candidates include incumbent Glenda Atkinson running in District 2; incumbent Derek Cotham in District 4; incumbent Jackie Holt in District 6; and incumbent Blake Alan Farr in District 9. Three candidates will be seeking the District 8 position. Paula Dyer and Chad Spears will be running against incumbent Nancy Ann McDonald.

Candidates have until today, April 9 at 12 noon to withdraw their name from the ballot.

The last day to register to vote in the August election is July 7. Early voting begins July 17 and ends August 1.
