May 12, 1960

County Judge A. B. Nicholson signed a proclamation proclaiming the week of May 9 to 14 as Rural Electrification Week in Lewis County.

Ed Holman, superintendent of the Hohenwald Genesco plant, received honorable mention for 1959 Genesco Man of the Year in the Community awards.

Flinn – McClanahan Company of Centerville received the contract for grading to be done at the site of the Boston Woven Hose and Rubber Company plant.

The City of Hohenwald notified residents that they would begin picking up stray dogs on May 2, 1960 and would continue throughout the month of May.

Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Atkinson announced the birth of their daughter, Angelia Darlene.

Annie Pace was honored for her birthday with a celebration held at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Funeral services were held for Epsie Beatty, 79, and Willie Waldrup, 88.

Ira Brackeen of Brackeen’s Gas & Oil, advertised his lease of gas pumps from Hickerson & Baker Co. “on the corner across from the Freight office in Hohenwald… Have good gas and oils and the price is right.”

“The Hound of the Baskervilles” and “The Man Who Understood Women,” starring Henry Fonda, were the Friday and Saturday double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

May 14, 1970

Photos of garbage dumped along side roads and hillsides was ran in the paper along with an article titled, “Garbage Disposal A Problem.”

The Lewis County Herald published Mayor Dol Willis’s mailed report about his tour of the Orient which started on May 7.

Robert Yokely was serving in Vietnam as a radioman with the Combined Action Program.

The summer Dixie Youth baseball program opened May 11 when Seigel Dixie Youth defeated the M. F. A. team with a score of 13 to 0. Randy Chandler was the winning pitcher.

Funeral services were held for Lawrence Hickerson, 72; Joe Lindsey, 74; Henry Steele, 71; and for Bessie Whitwell, 70.

Advertised specials at Piggly Wiggly included a tall can of Double-Q pink salmon for $0.79, three dozen eggs for $0.89, a one-pound box of Sunshine crackers for $0.39, and a bottle of Prell shampoo for $0.93.

An Elvis Presley double feature of “Spinout” and “The Trouble with Girls” was the Friday and Saturday movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

May 15, 1980

Mayor Phillip Griner signed a proclamation declaring May 11 through 18 as National Nursing Home Week in Hohenwald.

Robin Toole was hired as the social worker at Lewis County Hospital. Toole replaced Gladys Roden who resigned to spend more time with her family.

Chris Cook was installed as president of the Lewis County Jaycettes.

Darlene Johns was installed as president of the Lewis County Parent-Teachers Association.

Naymond, Marjorie, and Jim Graves, representatives at United Farm Agency, Inc., were awarded the Top District Office Award for sales in the first quarter of the year.

A Calcutta Golf Tournament was scheduled for May 25 at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Funeral services were held for [baby boy] Dunn, infant; and for Marvin Staggs, 71.

Chandler Furniture, 217 N. Park, advertised a Grand Opening to be held on May 17. A variety of prizes would be given away including a Sylvania 19” black and white TV, Clifty Farm country hams, and a Hoover vacuum cleaner.

“The Fog,” starring Hal Holbrooks and Adrienne Barbeau, and “City on Fire” were the weekend double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

May 24, 1990

Mayor Guy Nicholson and County Excecutive Paul Spears followed the progress of Billy the Kid & Company, Inc. by visiting one of the producer’s farms. The farm in Lewis County was planned to be open to visitors in September and would milk 2,000 goats.

Stadium lighting was installed at the new LCHS football stadium.

The Rod Brasfield Community Playhouse announced they would present the first annual Rod Brasfield Country Jamboree on May 25 and 26 at the LCMS auditorium.

An article titled “Cecil McKennon Got Fired Up and Joined” was reprinted from the 2nd annual Veterans Honor Day 1990, a supplement to the Columbia Daily Herald and the Mt. Pleasant Record. The article discussed McKennon’s WWII experiences.

Fred Pollock retired from teaching after 31 years of service in the Madison District School System in Michigan.

Funeral services were held for Sadie Brumley; Myrl Collier, 80; and for Aaron Duncan.

May 25, 2000

Lisa Moorehead was chosen as the 2000 Teacher of the Year at LCHS.

A nature pond was installed at Memorial Park. The pond featured a bridge, trees, shrubbery, aquatic plants and koi fish. This new feature was funded by grant money from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.

The annual J. M. Adcox Memorial Walking Horse Show was scheduled for June 23 at Memorial Park. This event was sponsored by the Lewis County Athletic Boosters Club.

Hohenwald Insurance Agency was featured in the Chamber Spotlight Column.

Army Spec. David Peluso arrived for duty at Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Hawaii.

Kyle Ellis was selected to serve as a student ambassador for the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Kenneth and Tina Drake announced the birth of their son, William.

Mr. and Mrs. Austin Bromley celebrated their 50th anniversary with a celebration.

Funeral services were held for Roy Barber, 80; Ronald Dickson, 55; and for Willie Kelley, 80.
