May 26, 1960

The Clean Up- Paint Up- Fix Up committee extended the campaign through the month of June. Much progress was reported with vacant lots being cleared, homes being remodeled, and painting throughout the city.

The American Red Cross reported that they needed 172 pints of blood from residents in order to have enough blood for every sick and hospitalized person in the county.

Figures released by County Savings Bond Chair F. A. Goodman showed that residents invested $19,460 in U. S. Savings bonds, ranking Lewis County as first in sales among the eight counties in the district.

The first golf tournament of the year was scheduled at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club for May 29.

First place winners in the annual 4-H Baking Contest were Jimmie Johnston, junior biscuit; Donna Brown, senior biscuit; and Linda Webb, muffins.

Employees of Willis Motor Company and their families enjoyed a picnic at Memorial Park on May 19.

Keaton-Adcox Insurance Agency announced that they had moved to their new office in the M. V. A. Motor Company showroom.

W. E. Barber announced that he sold the Barber Milling Company to James H. Wix who would continue to manufacture Green Valley Feeds and remain a dealer for Purina Chows.

Funeral services were held for Eufaula Dotson, 74.

Skinny Williams advertised that Williams’ Self Service Launderette would open May 27th with 20 automatic washers and eight gas dryers.

“From Hell to Texas,” “The Whole Truth,” plus the Bowery Boys in “Jinx Money” were the Friday and Saturday triple feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

May 28, 1970

Preliminary population figures for Lewis County were announced by the Census Bureau. The count was 6,533 compared with 6,269 in the official 1960 Census count.

The swimming pool at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club would open up for the season on May 29.

A Pitch, Hit and Throw baseball contest for boys aged 9 through 12 was planned for May 30 at Memorial Park. Winners would be eligible for district and state competition. This contest was sponsored by Phillips 66 Gas Corporation and would be judged by Coaches Eugene Grinder and Wilson West.

Ricky Cothran, Lanis Lindsey and Bobby Walker caught a string of 18 large-mouth bass.

Mr. and Mrs. James Bartholomew announced the birth of their daughter, Helen Lynn.

Annie Pace was honored for her birthday with a surprise belated dinner at David Crockett State Park Restaurant.

Funeral services were held for Rohn Calvin, 28; C. D. Carroll, 39; William Corter, 74; and for Billie Tolen.

Baker’s Dress Shop on Maple Street advertised a Selling-Out Sale. Due to an illness, Ethel Baker was going out of business after 27 years. All stock and fixtures were priced to sell, and the first 100 adults would “receive absolutely free 1 bag sugar as you enter the door.”

“Bonnie and Clyde,” starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, and “Bullitt,” starring Steve McQueen, were the Friday and Saturday double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

May 29, 1980

Highway Commissioner Finley Brown reported that heavy rainfall in the county did severe damage to the county’s rural road system. Many of the chert roads had just been repaired from the winter and earlier wash-outs were again washed out along with 15 bridges. This brought the total of bridges damaged by Spring storms up to 45.

Margaret Templeton was named Jaycette of the Year.

Hohenwald Elementary student Corinne Rodgers won first place in the Spring Arts Poetry Contest held by Columbia State Community College.

Maxine Poore retired from the Lewis County School System after teaching for the past 33 years. Poore was surprised with a “This Is Your Life” program during which family and college friends participated, followed by a Roast and the presentation of gifts from the faculty of Hohenwald Elementary.

Beverly Cothran graduated from U.S. Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base.

Mike Peery shot a hole-in-one during the UT Health Science Department golf tournament in Olive Branch, MS.

Funeral services were held for Rosa Akers, 76; Mary McCoy, 69; and for Jessie Phillips, 69.

Cloyd Peery advertised the opening of his new dentistry offices on Highway 20 East.

“Little Darlings,” starring Tatum O’Neal and Kristy McNichol, and “The Van” were the weekend double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

June 7, 1990

An overturned truck leaking gas caused a portion of Highway 48 to close to traffic. A deer that darted across the road caused the driver to hit his brakes, which in turn, shifted the load in the truck. As a result, the truck flipped and approximately 1,500 gallons escaped when one compartment was punctured during the overturn.

Dedication ceremonies for a statue at the new National Guard Armory on Linden Hwy were held on June 3. Judge Billy Townsend designed and sculpted the statue of a combat medic giving aid to a wounded soldier.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the Rod Brasfield Playhouse was held June 2 as part of Rod Brasfield Day.

A county-wide clean-up effort was scheduled for June 9. Several civic groups and service organizations would be picking up roadside litter.

Jeremy McElveen and Zachary Sharpe caught 10 catfish.

The following births were announced: Heather Lynn, daughter of Linn and Annette Hughes; Sabrina Dawn, daughter of Seth Edwards and Janice Rhodes; and Robert Heath, son of Bobby and Anita Hinson.

Dol and Arzell Willis celebrated their 60th anniversary with a reception held at the Lomax Church of Christ Annex Building.

Funeral services were held for Ralph Carroll, 60.

“Driving Miss Daisy,” starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman, was the weekend movie at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

June 8, 2000

Alice Landrum was elected President of the South Central Tennessee School Counselors Association.

David McPherson was named Teacher of the Year by the associates from the Wal-Mart Store in Hohenwald in appreciation for excellence in education.

Ridgetop B & B was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.

The following births were announced: Bauer Leigh, son of Barry and Stephanie Burney; and Candace Jordan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Todd Clay.

Funeral services were held for Fannie Carroll, 84; Jean Kurty, 65; Ina Staggs, 76; and for Shirley Zumstein, 59.
