July 07, 1960
Billy Grimes was named Lewis County Chair of the Civil War Centennial Commission by County Judge A. B. Nicholson. Mayor W. C. Keaton named Mrs. Reece Bell as City Chair for this Commission.
Dr. Robert Bain, from Wilson County, was now associated with Dr. W. C. Keeton at Boyce Clinic Hospital. Dr. Keeton stated that Dr. Bain would be associated with him until he left to go into the Armed Services.
Winners in the Clean Up, Paint Up, Fix Up Campaign were announced. Winners of the first prize of $25 were Wallace and Blakely Oil for their improvement on their commercial building; Cordell Hull for the remodeling of his house; Kenneth Kistler for the improvement on the grounds of his home; the First Assembly of God Church for the improvement on their church building, and the Methodist Church for the improvement of their church grounds.
June was the first month in 1960 when a surplus of precipitation was recorded for this year. Meriwether Lewis Park Ranger James Estes reported a total of 8.99 inches of rain for the month of June. This was 4.95 inches above the 73-year average. Mollie King reported a total of 7.45 inches fell in Hohenwald during June. The high for the month was 99 degrees on June 4; the low reading came on June 18 when the temperature was 48 degrees.
Judy Davis was honored for her birthday with a party hosted by Mrs. Johnnie Davis.
A birthday dinner was held at Meriwether Lewis Monument in celebration of the birthdays of Mrs. Ollie Crowell and her son, Jack.
The following births were announced: Ricky Lynn, son of Mr. and Mrs. William McCann; David Wayne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Jackson; Charles Albert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Whitehead; and Angela Denise, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russ Cooper.
Willis Motor Company advertised that they were a dealer for B. F. Goodrich Tires.
“High Flights,” starring Ray Milland, and “Day of the Outlaw,” starring Burl Ives, plus a cartoon carnival of six color cartoons were the Saturday feature shows at the Strand Theatre and the Friday and Saturday features at the Highlands Drive-In.

Local law enforcement officers destroyed a large still found near the Lawrence County line in Lewis County. The raid resulted in the destruction of four 1,000 to 1,200 gallon vats and other equipment, along with the confiscation of about 285 gallons of whiskey, 100 pounds of sugar, a pickup truck, and a water pump used to pump water from Joe Reed Hollow. Sheriff Gayther Hinson stated this was the largest rig he had ever seen. He also said that as they approached they could see one man leaving the scene, but they couldn’t identify the man.
Dr. Hyung Lee began practice with Dr. Carter Keeton this week at Lewis County Hospital.
Barbara Hinson hit a hole-in-one while playing with Idell Barber at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club. Hinson was the first woman to ever hit a hole-in-one at the local golf club. She used a No. 4 wood for the 160 yard par four hole.
Jack Turner built a cannon which was on display in his front yard on Mill Street. The cannon was completed on July 4th. He demonstrated its firing for the Lewis County Herald who reported, “Jack, we assume being careful, loaded the cannon with a cherry bomb and struck the match, after placing some power, not gun powder, in the barrel. It fired and gave the effect of the real thing. He said it would thrust a missile, but he didn’t elaborate on how far.” Although the cannon was for display, Turner said he would fire it off on special occasions as a gesture of patriotism.
Rainfall for the month of June was .60 inches above the forty-year average according to statistics kept by Meriwether Lewis Park Ranger Jacob Hamilton. The high temperature was 91 degrees on June 18, and the low of 50 degrees was recorded on June and June 28.
The Lewis County Herald ran the last of Mayor Dol Willis’ reports of his trip to the far east. It read, in part: “I hope you have enjoyed my report of the trip…. The one piece of advice I would like to give. Be happy with what you have and be proud you were born in this country where you have a choice.” Willis visited seven countries in three weeks. “We have the best place on earth to live… you didn’t know… what the word ‘poor’ was or what it meant. And you never knew how to appreciate your home before a trip like this.”
Funeral services were held for Edna Halfacre, 64; Ray Lynch, 30; Lula Morton, 75; and for Norman Spears, 48.
“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Catherine Ross, was the Friday through Monday movie at the Highlands Drive-In.

Kathleen Brower resigned as librarian at Lewis County Public Library. Patty Choate was hired as the new librarian. Choate assumed duties July 1.
Lisa Kelley was selected as 1980 Lewis County Fairest of the Fair. Lisa Crouch was selected at Junior Fairest of the Fair.
Three local residents were presented with awards by the Tennessee Highway Patrol for exceptional meritorious service in support of the Tennessee Patrol. Receiving awards were Ronnie Carroll, Harold Ray Carroll, and Jack Sealey. They were accredited with saving the life of a man who was injured in an automobile accident on May 5.
The following births were announced: Penny Allison, daughter of Perry and Sheila Carroll; Stephanie Deanna, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Frazier; and Kenda Nicole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kilpatrick.
James Odom was honored for his 53rd birthday with a dinner at his home attended by family and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Cothran celebrated their 39th anniversary with a surprise supper hosted by their family and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Everette Hinson celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception held at the Lomax Church of Christ.
Funeral services were held for Lester Gray, 68.
“Hollywood Knights” and “When Coming Back Red Rider” were the weekend double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

Oak Grove Methodist Church was the site for a bomb scare on Independence Day. Johnny Davis called the Sherriff’s Department at noon after finding what looked like a homemade bomb attached to a statue in front of the church. The bomb squad from Nashville was called to disarm the bomb which was an 8-ounce can with explosives inside it.
The Hohenwald City Council voted to increase the salaries of Hohenwald Police Officers by an average of $100 per month.
The historic Hohenwald Depot was burglarized. A telephone and antiques including a telegraph and headset, Pullman blanket, railroad pot, sugar bowl and creamer, and a cannon ball were taken.
Approximately 2,000 people attended Brooke Duncan Day activities at Memorial Park on July 7. Festivities raised enough money to purchase both a wheelchair and an access ramp for the Duncan’s van.
It was announced that twelve teenagers from Ireland would be spending the day in Hohenwald on July 15. The group of six Catholic and six Protestant youth, with their host families, would attend mass at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and stay for an afternoon picnic on church grounds. The teenagers were in Tennessee for a month-long visit as part of the Ulster Project.
Eula Baker was honored on her 88th birthday with a cookout at the home of her daughter.
The following births were reported: Briar Williams, son of Trent and Van Humphreys; and Sarah Theresa Marie, daughter of Virgil Steven and Patricia C. Smith.
Funeral services were held for Lillie Brown, 80; Henry Hickerson, 77; Clovis Turnbow, 72; Kimberly Rhinehart, 20; and for Barbara Vaughn, 93.
“Total Recall,” starring Arnold Arnold Schwarzenegger, was the weekend movie at the Highlands Drive-In Theater. Admission was $3.50 for adults; children under 12 admitted free with parents.

Luella Morris of Hohenwald was named Female Athlete of the Year at the 2000 South Central District Senior Games closing ceremony.
The annual Oak Grove fish fry was scheduled for July 14. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the fish fry, an assortment of entertainment would perform.
A tragic accident occurred when a vehicle pulled out in the path of a tractor trailer at the intersection of Highway 43 and Canaan Road. The tractor trailer struck the car in the driver’s side.
Canter Oil Company was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.
Claude and Michelle Lomax announced the birth of their son, William Codie.
Funeral services were held for Linda Barton, 58; Deana King, 59; Shirley McAtte, 62; Sarah Mizrahi, 21.
