Governor's order puts High School Fall Sports on hold

Earlier last week, Governor Bill Lee extended the state’s emergency order to protect against the coronavirus through August 29, 2020.

One of the provisions of those emergency ordedrs includes no contact sports, and that means soccer and football are both on hold with no competition and no scrimmages.

High school football season will not begin on time, and the TSSAA is unsure, at this point, whether teams will play a shorter season or if the season will extend further into the fall.

While the order remains in place, schools can’t have any competition or scrimmage with other schools. The order is currently set to expire August 29th.

The decision on any regular season and postseason scheduling impacts will be up to the TSSAA Board of Control.

TSSAA Executive Director Bernard Childress stated, “We are in the process of developing regular season and postseason options to present to the board for consideration. We are working with the governor’s office to ensure that our member schools are in compliance with the executive order in regards to athletic participation and contact sports.”
