Local softball tournament honors Becky Carroll, benefits Senior Citizens

Lewis County Memorial Park in Hohenwald will be the site of this weekend's inaugural Becky Carroll Memorial Spongeball Softball Tournament.

The tournament will be a Co-Ed tournament held in honor of Becky Carroll, an active member of the community who held the position of director of the Senior Citizens Center at the time of her recent death.

Ms. Carroll had been focusing on a project in the last few months to fund a new central heating and air unit for the Senior Center and had not completed her goal when she passed. Other members of the community saw an opportunity to honor Becky Carroll by raising the needed funds to complete the project, and the Memorial Softball Tournament was scheduled. Organizers hope the tournament will be a success and enable the project to be completed or, at the least, get closer to completion.

"The tournament is, of course, in honor of Becky," event organizer Taylor McVay shared. "We are donating all money raised to the Senior Center. The money will be used to get them a new central heating and air unit as they are without. Becky was doing everything she could to make that happen before she passed away, and we would like to make that accomplishment happen in her honor. We hope to make this benefit a huge success," she concluded.

As of press time, there were currently the following teams registered: Balls and Dolls, Bat Intentions, Balls Out, Tennessee Brawlers, and Freedom Flyers, all Hohenwald teams, as well as Backdoor Sliders of Centerville and Soft Bats of Columbia.

The double-elimination tournament is set to begin Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 8 a.m. There will be opportunities for those attending the tournament, as spectators and non-participants, to contribute to the fundraiser through donations.
