Glimpses of Hohenwald's Past

July 28, 1960

The public was invited to watch the playing of the second Invitational Tournament at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club on August 7.

Approximately 1,000 people attended the Lewis County Horse Show sponsored by the Lewis County Civic Club. There were 88 entries. Bobby Cothran won first prize in the class composed of Lewis County residents.

Jerry Ogg was assigned to the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Dempsey Goodman was serving aboard the Pacific Fleet attack transport USS Navarro.

The following births were announced: Gary Wayne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Quillen; Leonard Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Chapman; Billy Dan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Turnbow; Donna Kay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carroll; Terry Wayne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hooper; Gwenda Kay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Brown; Charles Robert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Braden Hinson; and Gary Randal, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nix.

“Dinosaurs,” starring Ward Ramay, and “Commanche Station,” starring Randolph Scott, were the Friday and Saturday double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In and the Saturday feature at the Strand Theatre.

July 30, 1970

PFC Jerry Staggs was involved in several large cache finds in a strip of border territory of in Vietnam. The Lewis County Herald published portions of the story which appeared in the June 22 issue of the Army Reporter.

The Lewis County Jaycees sponsored a rodeo at Tower Ranch on July 25 with proceeds of the event used in promoting a Christmas Parade in Hohenwald later in the year.

The Bible Quiz team from the First United Pentecostal Church won the Southeast Regional Bible Quiz Championship in Birmingham, Alabama. Members of the team were Bobby Barber, Joey Hensley, Johnny Hensley, Brenda Hooks, and Markie Webb. The team was coached by Mr. and Mrs. Gary Hensley.

Weeks Chevrolet-Pontiac was broken into with burglars taking mechanics’ hand tools, automobile parts, change from a candy vending machine and from a customer’s car being repaired in the shop. Entrance was gained through a back window.

Yard of the Week winners were announced as Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ingram on Park Avenue North, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Quillen on Swan Avenue, and W. B. Lester on Cedar Street.

“A Bullet for Pretty Boy,” starring Fabian Forte and Jocelyn Lane, and “Once You Kiss a Stranger” starring Paul Burke and Carol Lynley, were the Friday and Saturday double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

July 31, 1980

Approximately 15 families on Park Avenue North and surrounding area were evacuated from their homes at 3 a.m. on July 26 because of gas escaping from a broken natural gasline.

Billy Townsend was elected president of the Hohenwald Lions Club.

Representatives of Hohenwald Karate School participated in the Memphis Martial Arts Expo Tournament on July 26. Ray Marrero won first place in sparring, junior division, age 12 and 13.

Bobby Greenlee and Darrell Staggs were named Batting Champions for the Dixie Youth major league.

Rodger and Gina McDonald announced the birth of their son, Rodney Coolidge.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Jackson celebrated their 50th anniversary with a party held in the Riverside Community building.

Funeral services were held for Lila Lasics, 70; John Roder, 22; Donald Talley, Jr, infant; and for Webb Runions, 71.

Hohenwald Merchants advertised Hohenwald’s 1st annual Inside / Outside Sale to run August 1 through 9. Merchandise would be displayed in participating stores and on the sidewalks, $295 in cash would be given away in drawings, and the Country Shadow Band would perform August 2 on Main Street in conjunction with this event.

“Herby Goes Bananas” and “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” starring Angela Landsbury, were the weekend double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

August 2, 1990

Lewis County Schools would open for its first full day of school on August 17.

Approximately 100 persons attended a meeting with Saturn officials held at the LCHS library on July 24. The meeting was hosted by the First Citizens Bank and Lewis County Bank. An open forum was held with excerpts of Saturn’s philosophy and growth projections for this area being shared. A question and answer period was conducted afterwards.

An unusual vehicular accident occurred on East Main Street when a pickup truck traveling west was hit by a van with a German Shepherd dog in the driver’s seat. William Logan had left his dog in the van which had been parked in front of Der Hohenwald Market. The dog apparently knocked the van out of gear and it rolled into the street, striking the side of the truck. The accident was termed a “hit and run” as the canine jumped from the vehicle and fled.

Zac Barber won first place in fighting and forms, age five and under division, at the karate tournament held at Tennessee State University.

Mike Cothran and daughter Rhianna caught four catfish, four bream and bass while fishing at Laurel Hill Lake.

Herbert Rochelle grew a 12-ounce Siamese squash in his garden. Two vines that lay close together had two blossoms that grew together into the squash.

The following births were announced: Brennan Edwin, son of Barry Ross and Krista Bates; Kayla Rene, daughter of Bobby and Brenda York; and James Douglas, son of Drs. Patrick and Trina Peery.

Funeral services were held for Everett Bates, 79; and for Neva Frazier, 73.

“Days of Thunder,” starring Tom Cruise, was the weekend movie at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

August 09, 2000

Terry Colley was the Champion of the 32nd annual Invitational Golf Tournament held at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Lewis County Schools would open for its first regular full day of the school year on August 17.

The date of the South Central Area Fair was set for September 11 through 15.

U.S. Senator Al Gore was a guest speaker at a Drug Free Tennessee meeting held for LCHS band students and football players on August 7.

An act of vandalism was reported at the Sonic Drive-In with 23 of the 24 drive-in speakers being turned around on their posts.

William Brooks III enlisted in the U. S. Navy.

Marine SSGT Carl Smith was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier assault ship the U.S.S. Saipan in Liberia.

Mike and Rhianna Cothran caught 12 catfish while jug fishing at Laurel Hill Lake. The largest fish weighed approximately 17.25 pounds.

Roy Bennett grew a Siamese Cantaloupe in his garden.

Funeral services were held for Louella Gulley, 69; Paul Hensley, 55; Earle Hickerson, 80; and for John Mills, 71.
