August 11, 1960

Bids on the construction of the new Boston Woven Hose and Rubber Company industrial plant were opened at the Court House by J. H. Warf, chair of the Industrial Commission. Bids were being compared and analyzed by the commission and a contract would be awarded in the near future.

The City of Hohenwald announced that a water main would be installed on Smith Street to extend water west on Smith Street from Walnut Street.

Bob Swope of Nashville was the winner of the 2nd annual Invitational Golf Tournament held at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

The Jaycees Old Maid softball game was scheduled a second time for August 19 due to requests to reschedule the game. A thunderstorm that developed “practically eliminated” the crowd during the original game held a few weeks back.

Funeral services were held for Lot Osborn.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Sanders advertised that they were given notice to vacate the building their grocery store occupied at 105 West Main; however, Leland Poore agreed to construct a new building for their use. “At the earliest date possible, we hope to open our doors… with a complete line of groceries with the kindred lines of merchandise sold in modern Super Markets and at prices in keeping with our policy since coming to your town.”

“Tarzan the Ape Man” and “The Unforgiven,” starring Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn, were the Friday and Saturday double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In and the Saturday feature at the Strand Theatre.

August 13, 1970

The General Election and Primaries were held last week. In the General Election, Paul Spears was elected over Kenneth Turnbow as County Court Clerk and Thomas C. Carroll was elected Sheriff over Alton McLemore in two closely contested races. Spears won by 19 votes, and Carroll won by 108 votes.

A Senior Citizens Day in Lewis County would be observed on August 20 in connection with the Lewis County Fair. This annual event was typically held in May, but was unavoidably postponed and rescheduled for this date. All senior citizens 60 years or older would be admitted to the fair free of charge.

Mike Mathis left last Wednesday for Vietnam where he would be serving with the U. S. Army.

Michael Wilson was serving with the First Marine Aircraft Wing in Vietnam.

Mrs. Cloyd Peery and Mrs. Robert Gafford were first place winners in the 5th annual Ladies Golf League tournament held at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Winners in the Yard of the Week contest for the week of August 10 were Burton Pollock and Mrs. L. C. Whitaker. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lasies was chosen as the House of the Month.

Reverend Paul Thompson was ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church.

Oma Campbell was honored for her birthday with a surprise party given by her four children.

Funeral services were held for Lucille Fite.

“The Wild Rebels,” starring Steve Alamo, and “Day of Anger,” starring Lee Van Cleef, were the Friday and Saturday double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

August 14, 1980

The $10 million lawsuit filed in Lewis County Circuit Court on July 15 by attorneys for the Farm was dropped on August 11. The suit had been filed after a fruitless marijuana raid at the Farm on July 11 which lasted eight hours.

Voting was light in the Primary and General Elections. Boyd Humphreys was elected Assessor of Property and I. L. Bunch was elected Circuit Court Clerk.

City and County officials conducted a raid on a Metal Ford Road home, confiscating a garbage sack of 7,462 pills of 68 different varieties. Officers worked for two and a half hours separating and counting the pills.

The Lewis County Jaycettes undertook a community calendar service project to be displayed at City Hall. Projects and annual events of organizations could be listed on the calendar to avoid as many conflicts on dates as possible.

An article about Readis Tatum was reprinted in the Lewis County Herald. The article was titled “Crawfordsville Coach Not Handicapped in Building ‘Winners’” and had originally ran in the May 25, 1980 edition of The Commercial Appeal.

Funeral services were held for Georgie Arnold, 51; Mrs. B. E. Duncan, 77; and for Sara Shirley, 94.

Advertised specials at Griner’s Shop Rite this week included quarter pork loin sliced into chops for the price of $1.29 a pound, a five-pound bag of Gold Medal flour (plain or self-rising) for $0.99, and two cans of Del Monte green beans for $0.79.

“Legacy,” starring Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott, was the weekend movie at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

August 16, 1990

The “Say Anything” teen helpline was scheduled to go into operation on August 17. The hotline was established so that teenagers and pre-teens could talk with people their own age about problems they were having in their lives. All calls would be kept in strictest confidence.

Elected officials of Hohenwald and Lewis County were honored at a civic reception hosted by the Pilot Club of Hohenwald on August 17 at LCHS.

A bake sale to benefit the Hohenwald Depot was scheduled for August 25. The fundraiser was co-sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Lewis County Historical Society.

Six teenagers were injured in a two-car, high speed accident on Highway 48 South. Both drivers were charged with reckless driving.

The following births were reported: Kristen Lane, daughter of Troy and Christy Spears; Emily Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Miller; Jessica Faye, daughter of Richard and Sharon Lambert; Marisa Ann, daughter of Ricky and Diana Bryant; and Ashley Marie, daughter of Rodney and Tracy Lomax.

Funeral services were held for Marlin Clayton, 61; Jewel Clayton, 64; Arthur Haley, 62; and for George Lester, 67.

August 17, 2000

The Hohenwald Golf and Recreation Club finalized plans for the inaugural Dr. Virender Anand Memorial Senior Men’s Classic Golf Tournament to be played on August 25.

Several local seniors participated in the Tennessee Senior Games in Clarksville, bringing home a total of 17 medals. Winning gold medals were Gentry Johnson, Shuffleboard Singles; Shirley McGee, Shuffleboard Singles; and Luella Morris won eight gold medals in PowerWalk, 5K Run, 200m Run, 400m Run, 800m Run, 1500m Run, Shot Put, and Softball Throw.

The South Central Tennessee Railroad Authority awarded grants for industrial development to the Lewis County-Hohenwald Council on Economic Development and to Hickman County’s Vision 2000 industrial recruitment and economic development office.

Hohenwald Housing Authority was featured in the Chamber Spotlight columns in this newspaper issue.

Robert Ashworth and Josh Webb were featured in the Panther Spotlight column.

Christopher and Lachelle Staggs announced the birth of their daughter, Mackenzie Kaye.

Funeral services were held for Paula Barnes, 58; Timothy Churchwell, 34; M. L. Hogue, 66; and Isham Hooks, 93.
