Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898

Billy Griner

Billy Curry Griner, age 87, peacefully passed away on September 27, 2020 in his Hohenwald home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Hohenwald on July 5, 1933 to the late Conard Lester and Ella Mai (Curry) Griner.

Along with his parents, Mr. Griner was preceded in death by his grandson, Chad Curry Griner; and son in-law, Kenneth Karpel.

At the age of 20, Billy joined the United States Army where he served two years before being transferred to Army Reserves for another eight years of service. In July of 1964, he married his best friend and life partner, Irene King, and during their 56 years of marriage raised their children Rick, Connye, David and Brian. Billy worked for the Natchez Trace Parkway/National Parks Department in the maintenance department.

Billy was the type of person that never met a stranger. He would share his jokes with anyone who would listen. People were immediately drawn to his sense of humor and the compassion he showed everyone. His favorite place to be was outside, often taking off on camping adventures with the family. He was known for his cooking, especially his fried fish, which he passed the secret recipe on to his son. On Saturday afternoons, he could be found by the T.V. cheering on his favorite team, the Tennessee Volunteers. Nothing gave him greater joy then being surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Mr. Griner leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Irene Griner; children, Rick L. (Dana) Griner, Connye R. Karpel, David S. Griner, and Brian C. Griner; grandchildren, Jared (Becca) Karpel, Jennifer (Josh) Stutts, Brittany (T.J.) Remec, and Dane Curry; great-grandchildren, Laya C. Karpel and Shayna R. Karpel; sister in-law, Wanda K. Carroll; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and a host of special friends.

Funeral service was conducted Wednesday, September 30 at 1 p.m. at Hohenwald Church of Christ with Greg Smith and David Adcox officiating. Hayden Bass led the congregational singing for the service. Burial followed in Downey Cemetery.

Adair Funeral and Cremation Services assisted the family with arrangements.
