October 27, 1960

The Lewis County Civic Club voted unanimously to support the resolution of the Hohenwald Garden Club that the red crepe myrtle be adopted as the city flower.

Wilson Sharpe won an eight-day trip to Nassau by selling the most General Electric appliances among forty-five dealers. Sharpe sold 133 appliances during the contest.

Former resident Carol Rowe travelled to Rio De Janerio where she shot fashion photographs for the magazine “California Girl.”

The LCHS Panthers defeated Loretto with a score of 40 to 0.

Mr. and Mrs. James Wix announced the birth of their daughter, Tina Rebecca.

Mrs. C. F. Littrell was honored for her birthday with a surprise dinner held in Lawrenceburg by members of her family.

Funeral services were held for Arthur Beatty, 54.

“The 4-D Man,” starring Robert Lansing and Lee Meriwether, and “Fort Bowie,” starring the Ben Johnson, were the Saturday night double feature movies at both the Highlands Drive-In and the Strand Theatre.

October 29, 1970

The Lewis County Civic Club met and discussed the Lewis County Hospital. Although several doctors had been contacted regarding coming to Hohenwald, no definitive agreements had been reached.

Dixie Youth Baseball was trying to raise $10,000 for the construction of a baseball park located within Memorial Park. Approximately $4,000 had been raised to date, with a gospel singing being announced for November 12 at the LCHS auditorium.

Lewis County reached their quota of 125 pints of blood donated when the Red Cross Bloodmobile visited the county on October 26. Blood Drive Chair Ernest Pollock stated that all residents “would now be able to receive blood from the Red Cross when needed” because the quota had been reached.

Mr. and Mrs. Larry Green announced the birth of their daughter, Lori Ann.

Betsy Bell, Hazel Bell, and Mrs. Curtis Dabbs were honored for their recent birthdays with a joint party hosted by Sara Darden.

Funeral services were held for Ola Hall, 72; and for Henry Skelton, 75.

“Cry of the Banshee,” starring Vincent Price, and “Eve,” starring Celeste Yarnall, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

In area news: Superintendent Robert Haraden announced that the 8-mile section of the Natchez Trace Parkway north of Tennessee Route 99 would be opened during the fall foliage season. Visitors taking advantage of this sightseeing opportunity would find it necessary to turn around at the end of this section and return by the same route since this was a “dead end” road at this time with no connecting state or county roads.

October 30, 1980

South Central Bell announced that beginning November 1, 1980, in the Hohenwald area, the telephone operator would no longer ask “Your number please?” when dialing a long distance call. Long distance calls would be identified and charged automatically by new equipment.

The Hohenwald Police Department urged residents to be careful on Halloween and that their department would be strictly enforcing the No Open Beer Law on Halloween night. The Lewis County Civil Defense would also be sworn in as special police for duty on Halloween night to help enforce this law.

Residents participated in a Bike-A-Thon held at Meriwether Lewis National Park and raised over $800 for the Cystic Fibrosis campaign.

LCHS Band rated third in the state at the Tennessee Class A Marching Band Championship State Finals held in Mt. Pleasant.

Mavalene Frazier and Lola Whitworth each had a score of 200 for the high individual game during the Tuesday Night Ladies Bowling League play. Judy Pratt had the high series. Sherry Breece took the high game and high series honors with scores of 188 and 482 during Thursday Night Ladies League play.

The LCHS Panthers won their eighth game of the season, defeating Collinwood with a score of 21 to 0. The final touchdown was by Kerry Cagle in the third quarter after a 78-yard drive in 8 plays. Wade Peery kicked the extra point. Clark Carroll led the offense with 129 yards in 25 carries.

Tommy Clayton and Ken Crowell were named LCHS Panther Players of the Week.

Funeral services were held for Alec Blocker, 23; Willie Hensley, 66; L.H. Holloway, 55; and for Mary Mitchell, 56.

“Next Movie,” starring Cheech and Chong and “Animal House,” starring John Belushi, Peter Riegert, and Tim Matheson, were the weekend double feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

November 01, 1990

The Lewis County Emergency Communication District Board met and completed agreements with South Central Bell to put in place the development of Enhanced 911 service. It was estimated that it would take 18 to 24 months to fully implement and begin operation of this service.

Yoshikazu Shibuya, assistant vice-president of the Honda Motorcycle Plant in Marysville, OH, and Steven Carter, engineering coordinator quality control for the plant, visited the local Honda dealership, Hensley Cycle Center, to inquire about customer’s opinions on quality of Honda products and service.

A Lewis County resident suspected of murder was apprehended by the Perry County Sheriff’s Department. Several witnesses stated that the murder of a Lawrenceburg resident took place at party near the Perry County – Lewis County Line. No body was found during a search of the property.

A resident was injured while installing a television antenna. During the installation, the antenna fell on electrical wires causing burns on the man.

A Lewis County School bus was involved in a two-vehicle collision at the entrance of the bus lot on the intersection of Cedar Street and East Linden. No injuries were reported and no children were on the bus at the time of the incident.

Janet Turner was honored at a luncheon given by the Nashville Banner newspaper for writing a letter to the editor chosen as the best of the week.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Collinwood with a score of 34 to 8. Richie Carroll led the team in rushing with 8 carries for 65 yards, and Randal Simmons led the team in tackles with 17.

Randall Mitchell was serving with the United States Army in Saudi Arabia.

Barry and Tammy King announced the birth of their son, Bradley Foster Davis.

Funeral services were held for Annie Brewer, 77; Clint Brown, 63; Nathan Conner, 18; Jeffery Ellison, 31; and Marie Rasbury, 87.

November 02, 2000

State Representative John White reported on the SR 99/US Hwy 412 road project, stating that portions of the road were either under construction or in the development phase.

Three juveniles parked on Overhead Bridge Road were charged with possession of cocaine and cocaine paraphernalia. Sheriff deputies on routine patrol spotted the car. As they approached the car, the driver took off. The vehicle was pursued until the driver stopped.

MLEC was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.

The LCHS girls volleyball team competed in the State Tournament for the first time in local sports history.

Korbin Hinson was crowned king in his age division at the USA Beauties Pageant held in Dickson.

The following births were announced: Mari Kathryn, daughter of Andy and Renee Reels; and Emma Grace, daughter of Rodney and Kathy Hensley.

Edward and Clara Tenison celebrated their 57th anniversary with a reception attended by family and friends.

Funeral services were held for Magdeline Carter, 79; and for Robert Riley, 85.
