The Lewis County Middle School Lady Panthers and Panthers hosted the E.O. Coffman Lady Panthers and Panthers on Monday night, November 9, 2020 for Junior Varsity and Varsity action.
In the girls' Junior Varsity game to open the night, the Coffman Lady Panthers controlled the flow of the game from the opening tip.
The Coffman JV ran out to a 16-0 lead before Addison Carroll was finally able to put the Lady Panthers on the board, but still trailing 19-2 at the half.
In the second half, Coffman's JV continued the dominance, limiting Lewis County to only a Haylee Carroll field goal and sprinting to a 39-4 win in junior varsity. Addison Carroll and Haylee Carroll each had 2 for the Lady Panther JV, who evened their record at 1-1 on the season.
In the boys' Junior Varsity game, it was the Lewis County JV that took an early lead in a first half that saw Bo Banks and Phenix McDonald combine for 10 of the teams’ 15 first half points and the Panthers took a 15-13 lead into the half.
The Coffman Panthers clawed back in the second half, limiting Lewis County to 5 points in the half and tying the game at 20 to send the game into an overtime period. Phenix McDonald knocked down two free-throws late in the overtime period to account for the only scoring in overtime, giving the Panthers a 22-20 win over Coffman in junior varsity play.
Phenix McDonald led with 7, Bo Banks 6, Maddox Tanner 3, and Kade Carroll, Ben Price, and Julian Jones each with 2. The Panther JV is now 2-0 on the season.
In girls' varsity play, the Lady Panthers hosted an undefeated Coffman Lady Panther team. It only took moments into the opening quarter for the Coffman Lady Panther defense to cause problems for the home team, as the defensive pressure led to open opportunities and Coffman sprinted out to a 21-0 lead in the opening quarter.
The Lady Panthers finally got on the board in the second quarter on free throws from Olivia Smith and Jazzy Conner, but Coffman continued to dominate both ends of the floor and took a 35-3 lead in at the half.
After the break, it was more of the same for Lewis County, as the continued pressure forced turnovers leading to scoring for Coffman as the Lady Panthers were again shut out in the period and Coffman was in control 51-3. Stailee Moseley broke another long scoring drought with a basket in the fourth quarter, and Coffman took the final 55-5. Olivia Smith and Stailee Moseley each had 2 for Lewis County, and Jazzy Conner added 1. The Lady Panther record dropped to 5-3 on the season.
In boys' varsity play, it was the home team that was the aggressor early, applying intense pressure to Coffman and pulling out to a 16-2 lead behind 8 Steele Moseley points.
Coffman fought back in the second quarter as Lewis County was limited to only 7 points while Coffman cut into the lead with 11 in the period, making it a 23-13 game at the half.
Out of the break, the Coffman Panthers continued to chip away at the Lewis County lead, outscoring the home team 8-7, making the score 30-21 moving into the fourth.
A loud and proud Lewis County crowd rocked LCMS gymnasium in the final six minutes of play as the Panthers continued to fight off the Coffman attack and pull away to a 44-33 win.
Lewis County was led by Steele Moseley's 16, Cade Lomax and Sam Moore had 10 each, and Ryan Tanner 8. The Panthers improved to 7-1 on the season, winning their sixth straight.
