Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898
Well, it is a damp and rainy morning here in our little valley. The wind is really blowing hard and heavy rain and possible storms are on the way. I don’t have a fire in the old wood heating stove this morning, first time since November, it’s just a little too warm. But I do have my cup of hot coffee - that is good anytime. The cats have all eaten and are back on their bed for their cat nap. It is hard to believe that just a week ago, we had a big snow on the ground and 30 degrees. Now this morning it was 65 degrees. But we are in March and my mama always said that March is our unpredictable month. You know how older people had their ways of saying things, and most of the time they were right.
Well I wonder what this new year will bring. The last year was the worse I have ever known. When we were growing up, we had a hard time and we were poor, but of course we didn’t know we were poor. We had a hard working mama and daddy. Daddy went to work and mama stayed home and took care of everything. She had a garden, canned food, cleaned and took care of us. We made do with what we had and never wasted anything. We didn’t know anything like today’s eating out or running to the store everyday. We ate our meals together (mama’s cooked food), lights were turned off when not needed. We went to bed early and we got up early.
I think last year, 2020, may have taught some of us a good lesson. We were living so fast and we were just taking everything for granted. Maybe the good Lord is trying to say, hey slow down and look at what you have and how blessed we are. Sometimes we may just need something to get our attention and help us to see what we really have.
I sat down and looked around me and asked myself, now what do I need? You know, I couldn’t see anything I really needed. Not what I wanted but what I need. Have you ever done that?
Well I looked out the back door and there are not many bales of hay stacked across the creek. But I can hear the old John Deere tractor coming down the neighbors’ driveway. Our neighbor is hauling hay to feed his cows before the heavy rain gets here. A farmer’s work is never done.
Well I’m not going to worry about tomorrow, but I will do the best I can today. Back to the windy, raining morning and hot coffee - and the peace here in our little valley. God has it all under control and He is the light at the end of the tunnel.
God bless,
Evelyn “E.T.” Trevathan
