March 08, 1951

Sgt. J. C. Goodman was wounded in action in Korea.

Sgt. Johnnie Hickerson was awarded a Bronze Star medal for outstanding service in Korea.

Eugene Williams of Nashville was named pastor of the Nazarene Church in Hohenwald.

The Nashville Tennessean announced a Rural Homelife Program that would award cash and area-wide recognition to outstanding families throughout Middle Tennessee. As part of this contest, one local family who farmed would be named “Rural Family of the Year for Lewis County,” be awarded $30, and have the chance to compete for the title of “Rural Family of the Year in Middle Tennessee.” Other cash prizes of $25, $20, and $15 would also be awarded to winning local families.

Mr. and Mrs. Walker Rasbury announced the birth of their son, Eddie Wayne.

Representatives of the twelve Home Demonstration Clubs of Lewis County paid for publication space in order to voice their support of Home Demonstration Agent Miss Elliott, who had resigned her post. The paid space accused Judge Humphreys with interfering with the duties of the Home Demonstration Agent and berating “said agent in a manner unbecoming to a Judge.” The ad also stated that “we…. go on record as unanimously condemning the Judge’s actions” and stating their intent to not vote for the judge in the next election.

“Without Honor,” starring Laraine Day and Dane Clark, and “Arizona Territory,” starring Whip Wilson and Andy Clyde, were the Friday and Saturday night double feature at the Strand Theatre.

March 09, 1961

The City of Hohenwald reminded residents that poultry and dogs should not be allowed to run at large. “We are receiving complaints that poultry… as well as dogs are destroying and damaging flower gardens, shrubs, etc…. please confine, and give… our citizens a chance to continue beautifying their homes and planting gardens.”

Terry Hickerson, Brenda Patton, and Patsy Riley were named to the All-Tournament team from the 21st District.

Taylor Phillips was elected president of the Hohenwald Rotary Club.

A total of $926.12 was collected in February in the annual Lewis County Heart Fund Drive.

Grady Brown was serving aboard the USS Lexington with the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific.

The Hohenwald Garden Club announced it would sponsor a sale of crepe myrtle shrubs because the crepe myrtle had been adopted by the Garden Club and other civic organizations as the official flower for Hohenwald.

The Lewis County Herald published its first annual “Farming for Profit” section which included useful information for local farmers.

Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Baker announced the birth of their son, Gregory Neal.

Funeral services were held for Richard Harwood, 12; and for Robert Graves, 54.

Bunch Tire Service advertised that they were “Now Open!” and offering a guaranteed re-cap tire service. “Nothing but expert workmanship with the best and newest re-capping equipment used.”

“The Time Machine” and “The Wild One,” starring Marlon Brando, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theatre and the Saturday movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

March 11, 1971

Trooper Paul Hedge of the Tennessee Highway Patrol reminded residents that all motor vehicles should properly display their registration plates.

A total of $1,611.82 was collected during the annual Cerebral Palsy drive in Lewis County.

Four teenagers were injured when the car they were riding in ran off the end of the airport on Linden Hwy. The teens were transferred to area hospitals for treatment.

A total of 6.08 inches of rain and snow fell in Lewis County during February 1971. The low for the month was 6 degrees on February 8, and the high was 74 degrees on February 19.

Funeral services were held for James West, 55.

“The Baby Killer,” starring Barbara Hershey, and “The McKenzie Break,” starring Brian Keith, were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

March 12, 1981

Mayor Phillip Griner signed a proclamation declaring March 8 through 14, 1981, as Girl Scout Week in Hohenwald.

The annual “Old Maid” basketball game was scheduled for March 12 at LCHS gym. Activities would also include a beauty contest between games. All proceeds would be used for the athletic departments at Lewis County School.

Dennis Johnston was serving aboard the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy in the Mediterranean.

Mr. and Mrs. Walt Thompson were named County Coordinators of Perry, Wayne, Lewis, and Hickman Counties for the 1981 Palm Sunday Paper Sale to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Vanderbilt University.

Larry Williams was promoted to plant manager of the Hohenwald American Biltrite plant.

Future Homemakers of America and Future Farmers of America held a 1950s dress up party.

Mr. and Mrs. Larry Walton announced the birth of their son, Clint Matthew.

Funeral services were held for Mary Leighty, 58.

Holt’s IGA advertised a Grand Opening on March 11 with free balloons for children, free samples, a drawing for a country ham, and buy one get one free specials. Other specials included a pound of IGA sliced bacon for $0.99, a two-liter bottle of Pepsi-Cola for $0.99, ground beef for $1.09 a pound, cabbage for $0.15 a pound, carrots for $0.19 a pound, and strawberries for $1.29 a pound.

“Popeye,” starring Robin Williams, was the weekend feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

March 07, 1991

Dolene Rogers announced her candidacy for Mayor of Hohenwald. She was the first woman to run for City Mayor.

Stacey Tanner was named valedictorian for the LCHS Class of 1991. Alisha Camp was named salutatorian.

LCHS was the first winner of the T.S.S.A.A. District 9AA Ron Wallace Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

Representatives of the Downtown Merchants Association met with the Hohenwald City Council to discuss a proposed mini-mall on Main Street. Under the proposal, one building on the north side of Main Street would be removed to open up access to the City Parking Lot with the possibility of remodeling buildings on each side of the passageway to form a mini-mall.

An article ran on Recycle Today, a non-profit community service in Lewis County. In the first 10 months of service, a total of 113,421 pounds of recyclable materials had been kept out of the landfill and collective points for recycling were placed at Quick Serve Food Mart, John’s C-Mart, and Harris Building Supply.

Mike Webb was the opening performance for the T. Graham Brown concert held at the Huntingdon Civic Auditorium.

Steve London was hired as manager for the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

The following births were announced: Devin Randall, son of Tony and Tabitha Staggs; Christopher Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Tackett III; Lauren Nicole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Matthews; Malissa Marie, daughter of David and Jennifer Spears; and Malea Shae, daughter of Mike and Mia Hinson.

Doris Russell and Amanda Whitehead were honored for their birthday with a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Whitehead.

Lola Bullion was honored for her birthday with a surprise dinner at Denny’s Restaurant in Waverly.

Nannie Bunch and Nannie Nichols were honored for their birthdays with a celebration at Lewis County Seniors Citizens.

Funeral services were held for Edward Cosper, 74; Elsie Jennings, 71; and for Granville Pevehouse, 82.

March 08, 2001

Sentencing began on February 25 for the defendants indicted on drug charges. The 52 indictments involved 81 separate charges.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation submitted an application for channel relocations and culverts associated with SR-99 (US 412).

Carroll Surveying was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.

Evan Ward graduated from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy.

J. A. Davis was honored for 35 years of service and William Morris was honored for 34 years of service with the Dana Corporation in Hohenwald.

Father and son, John and Troy Barber, both made a hole-in-one while playing at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Barbara Odom was elected Worthy Matron for the Hohenwald Chapter 393 Order of the Eastern Star.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Lewisburg with a score of 51 to 44. Kyle Clayburn was the top scorer for the team with 18 points.

Andy and Misty Webb announced the birth of their daughter, Kaylie Lauren.

Iva Schmidt was honored for her 96th birthday with a party held at the Perry County Nursing Home in Linden.

Funeral services were held for Betty Cotham, 69; Margie Frazier, 57; and Olien Whitehead, 54.
