Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898
Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative’s annual scholarship contest is underway! Winners in each MLEC service county will receive either a $2000 or $1000 scholarship.
To win, high school juniors are asked to write a short story titled “Electric Cooperatives – Building a Brighter Tennessee.” Students should use creativity and co-op facts to explain how electric co-ops like MLEC help build brighter futures for their hometowns through investments in education, energy, broadband, economic development and more.
The girl and boy at each high school receiving the highest score and living in a home served by MLEC will be awarded a scholarship. (First Place $2,000 and Second Place $1,000). MLEC’s overall winner from within the service area wins a $3,000 scholarship and competes for additional scholarships. One lucky Tennessee student will also win a $10,000 scholarship! (Home schooled/private school students will be grouped with the public high school that they would attend for grading. Scholarship winners must reside within the MLEC service area.)
Entries are due April 1, 2021. Junior English teachers are helping administer the contest and have related materials. Access is also available on mlec.com or by contacting MLEC.
The contest is typically known as the Washington Youth Tour; however, due to COVID-19 safety concerns, the trip has been cancelled for 2021.
MLEC is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric utility that serves more than 35,000 meters in Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Lewis and Perry counties. Learn more about MLEC and MLConnect broadband internet at http://www.mlec.com.
