March 15, 1951
The main headline for the week was “Buy A Shrine Junior League Paper Sunday, Help A Crippled Child.” The annual paper sale was scheduled for March 18. The newspaper reported that a total of 14 Lewis County children had received free treatment at the Junior League Home for Crippled Children during 1951. Photos and/or names of some of the children were published to help draw support for this fundraiser.
The following Lewis County residents were inducted into the U. S. Army: Rufus Ackers, Jr.Clyde Clifton, Claude Davidson, Jr., Charles Peery, Robert Tucker, and Joe Staggs.
Ray Clay was chosen as “Honor Man” of Company 90-51 while completing U. S. Naval training.
W. D. Baker was honored for his 80th birthday with a dinner attended by family and friends.
The following births were announced: Brenda Kay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Durham; Deborah Louise, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Brown; and Jonathan Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Jones.
Funeral services were held for Tommy Hinson.
“Trigger, Jr.,” starring Roy Rogers and Trigger, and “Devil’s Doorway,” starring Robert Taylor and Louis Calhern, were the Friday and Saturday night double feature at the Strand Theatre.
General Café advertised that it had been elected to membership in the American Restaurant Association “in which the membership is restricted to the best restaurants in each city and town.”
In area news: David Westbrooks was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star medal for his gallant efforts to repel enemy troops by machine gun fire. Ceremonies were held at the home of his parents in Linden.
March 16, 1961
Street lights were being installed in the recently annexed area of the city; in addition to the incandescent lights being installed throughout the city to replace “old, outdated lights.”
Facilities of the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club would be available to all residents through membership only beginning April 1, 1961. This included use of the golf course, club house, swimming pool, and skeet range.
The State Fish and Game Commission announced that Cane Creek would be stocked with rainbow trout in early March, with additional releases made in April and May.
Ernest Pollock, manager of the Highlands Drive-In Theatre, announced that the drive-in would change its seasonal hours to be open every night in the week beginning March 17.
Joe Dee Kelley resigned his position as pastor of the First Assembly of God Church in order to accept the pastorate of Whitefield Assembly near Memphis.
Dave Beatty was honored for his 86th birthday with a surprise party attended by family and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Billy Griner announced the birth of their daughter, Connye Renee.
H. N. Mann was honored on his 93rd birthday with a reception held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Plummer.
“Tarzan’s Lost Safari” and “Walk Like a Dragon” were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theatre and the Saturday movies at the Highlands Drive-In.
March 18, 1971
The City of Hohenwald purchased the Grover Mill Yard property, approximately 20 acres, for use as a future industrial site.
Vandals broke into the cart house at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club, taking a golf cart belonging to Henry Harris and running it over the golf course, into a tree, and then into the lake. Also taken were golf clubs valued at $900 that belong to three different club members.
The LCHS Class of 1971 announced they would stage their senior play, “Deadly Ernest” on April 2.
James Quillen completed firing exercises while serving the “L” Battery, Fourth Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment at Camp Fuji, Japan.
Funeral services were held for John Kilpatrick, 100, and Occie Poore, 84.
“King of the Grizzlies” and “Kiss & Kill,” starring Christopher Lee and Richard Greene, were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.
March 19, 1981
C. A. Tutor, 86, and Loy Anderson, 80, were recognized as the oldest male and female employee in Lewis County at a luncheon at the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center.
W. C. Amacher, of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, was promoted to captain of the Lawrenceburg District.
The following members of the Tennessee National Guard in Hohenwald received promotions: Danny Atkinson to First Sergeant, Jerry Carroll to Private 2c, and Valaurie Reeves to Private 2c.
Dale and Martha Dudley were invited to tour the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Dickson. The invitation came after company officials learned of Coke bottle costumes the Dudleys made last fall for a Halloween party at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.
Jean Coop was promoted to San-Dan third degree black belt.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Carroll announced the birth of their son, Kenneth Wesley.
Funeral services were held for Arlie Duncan, 76.
“Fear No Evil,” starring Stefan Arngrim, was the weekend feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.
March 14, 1991
Mayor Guy Nicholson signed a proclamation to declare March 1991 as Red Cross Month in Hohenwald.
The Lewis County Commission met in a special session on March 7 with an audience of 150 local residents to hear information regarding the need, construction costs and financing of a jail and additions to school facilities.
A hit and run accident occurred at Morrow’s Food Town on March 6.
Maria Caruso was named LCES Teacher of the Year.
Lewis Community Hospital announced that a portion of the March 18 County Commission meeting would be reserved for a brief presentation by corporate and local officials of Lewis Community Hospital with an opportunity for residents to ask questions.
The Heritage League announced it would sponsor the High Forest Beauty Pageant with a change of the event from spring to fall.
Kenneth Kelsey and Cathy Mash were named co-chairs for the Lewis County Palm Sunday Paper Sale.
Dr. Terry Grinder was named chair of the Heart Sunday Drive.
The LCHS Class of 1991 senior play, “Suitable for Hanging,” was scheduled for March 22 and 23.
First place winners in the Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby were Brandon Pace, style; Nicholas Stubblefield, speed; and Jimmy McCann, celebrity race.
A human interest story ran on Johnnie McDonald and his son, Johnny McDonald, who were reunited after 24 years.
Kent Edwards was elected vice president of Zeta Phi Zeta, the national honor society for veterinary medicine.
Amy Clifton competed in a State Cheerleader competition conducted by Cheerleaders of America in Ashland City.
The following births were announced: Brandon Scott, son of Scott Powers and Alisa Burlison; and Macy Brooke, daughter of Tim and Sharon Bastin.
Janet Turner was honored for her birthday with a celebration hosted by Mr. and Mrs. James Hurt.
Oscar Barter and son, Donnie, were honored for their birthdays with a celebration held in the fellowship hall of First Pentecostal Church.
Funeral services were held for Eurmon Dabbs, 83; Joseph Goodman, 71; Leroy Johns, 62; Harley Kidd, 66; Mary King, 73; Thelma Ringenberg, 71; and for Louise Zopfi, 73.
March 15, 2001
Senator Bill Frist introduced a bill to expand the Appalachian Regional Commission to include Hickman, Lawrence, Lewis, Perry, and Wayne Counties.
Eighteen LCHS students participated in a School-to-Work program where students were able to leave school after lunch to work at a participating business, receive a salary, and earn class credit toward graduation from high school.
Natchez Trace Wilderness Preserve was featured in the Chamber Spotlight Column.
The LCMS Cheerleaders won first place in a cheerleading competition hosted by the LCMS Cheerleaders on March 10. Casey Anderson was chosen as Miss Cheerleader 2001.
Baseball alumni representing 1978 up to 2000 played the first game on the new baseball field at LCHS on March 11. Lynn Tiller threw out the first ball.
The LCHS softball team broke in their new field with an 11 to 1 victory over Clifton. Lynzie Tiller pitched three innings, striking out eight of the ten batters. Sara Jaszewski pitched the last two innings, striking out four. Neither pitcher allowed a hit.
John Mays graduated from Army basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.
Bob and Ann Hebner returned from a visit to Antarctica.
Funeral services were held for Dennis Carroll, 77; James Castle, 65; Laquisha James, 25; Lena Kelley, 94; Loyd Seiber, 89; and for Anna Staggs, 89.
