March 22, 1951

Former resident Henry Fain won the title of Weight Lifting Champion and record holder (in the 165-pound class) for the State of Tennessee.

The Shrine-Junior League Paper Sale held here raised over $400.

Charles Sims was inducted into the U. S. Army.

Attempted burglary charges against two Mt. Pleasant youth involved in an alleged break-in attempt at a Lewis County school were dropped. The pair, who claimed they sought refuge in the school from rain, were assessed minor fines for trespassing. A Hampshire girl was wounded slightly by a shotgun blast, or broken glass from the shot, when the principal’s son fired a gun during the incident.

A number of children in the Swan Creek community were sick with chicken pox.

Ralph Mitchell resigned as manager of the Co-Op store. W. T. Rasbury was hired to fill his vacant position.

Funeral services were held for Sam Roberson and for Linda Yearta, infant.

“Tarzan’s Desert Mystery,” starring Johnny Weismuller, and “Stage to Mesa City,” starring All “Fuzzy” St. John and Jennifer Holt, were the Friday and Saturday night double feature movies at the Strand Theatre.

March 23, 1961

The months of May and June 1961 were designated as Clean Up, Paint Up, Fix Up months in Hohenwald. W. L. Tuttle was named chair for the 1961 beautification campaign.

Cloyd Peery was named district chair for the Buffalo River District Boy Scouts. He replaced Fred Kittrell.

The LCES and LCHS bands announced they would close the 1961 season with a concert at the LCHS auditorium on March 24.

Naymond Graves, representative for United Farm Agency, was recognized for high sales and consistency in sales performance.

G. K. Anderson, salesman for M. V. A. Motor Company, was presented Ford Motor Company’s 300-500 Club Award for retail sales performance.

Fred Lynch was presented a Genesco service pin for 15 years, and Winfred White was presented a pin for 20 years of service.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edwards announced the birth of their son, Charles Keith.

Funeral services were held for Martha Brown, 91; J. P. Buchanan; and for Mamie Williams, 76.

Frances’ and Celia’s Beauty Shoppe advertised a Grand Opening for March 24 and 25. The Salon was located at 27 Park Avenue North.

“Country Music Jubilee,” starring Minnie Pearl and over 100 Grand Ole Opry Stars, and “For the Love of Mike” were the Friday and Saturday double feature movies at the Strand Theatre and the Saturday movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

March 25, 1971

Golf clubs taken from the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club on March 13 were found by Club Manager C. S. Craig when he opened the club house this week. The three sets, valued at $900, were found piled on the golf course in such a manner so that they could be easily seen.

Eddie Floyd completed advanced infantry training at Fort Polk, Louisana.

Jeff Johnson was the winner of the Cub Scout Pack 322 Pinewood Derby.

Girl Scout Troops 843 and 1037 sponsored an art show at Memorial Park on March 19. First place winners were Teresa Anthony, Troop 843; and Janet James, Troop 1037.

Funeral services were held for Lillie Burns, 75.

Walt Disney’s “Boatnik,” starring Phil Silvers, and “Viva Max!,” starring Peter Ustinov, were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

March 26, 1981

The 1981 LCHS Senior Class announced they would present three different plays on three different nights. William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” would be performed on April 2. “Showdown at Rattlesnake Gulch” would be performed on April 3. “The Sound of Murder” would not only be performed on April 4, but was also billed as the first Senior Play to be held on a Saturday night.

Air Force Staff Sergeant Michael Fournier participated in the return of the 52 former American hostages from Iran.

Dan Kittrell joined the U. S. Navy on the delayed entry program.

Meadow Gold team took high honors at the Wednesday Night Mixed Bowling League with a high series score of 2,427. Joe Cook bowled the high series for men with 663. Lola Whitworth bowled the high series for women with 635.

Gregory Whitehead completed U. S. Navy recruit training at Naval Training Center, Orlando, Florida .

Millie Seiber was honored for her 75th birthday with a dinner and party.

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Anderson celebrated their 60th anniversary with a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Skelton.

Funeral services were held for Felix Beatty, 84; James Brewer, 79; Lois Davis, 72; Carlos Pope, 79; and for John Warrington, 79.

“Seems Like Old Times,” starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase, was the weekend feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

March 21, 1991

Lewis County Commissioners voted 17 to 5 to approve a $2,200,000 bond issue for capital projects in Lewis County to finance the construction of a new jail and construction of additions at three Lewis County Schools.

Betty Adams, Commissioner of the State Department of Youth, visited Lewis County on March 19 for an Education Forum held at LCHS.

The LCHS Class of 1991 announced they would present their Senior Play “Suitable for Hanging” on March 22 and 23.

Genesco Laredo/Code West held an egg hunt for employees and families.

The Lewis County Jaycees held their first annual fishing tournament at Mousetail Landing State Park. Patrick Maxwell and Allen Lackley won first place, catching a fish weighing 16 pounds and 13 ounces.

Tim Tiller was the first place winner at a Table Tennis Tournament held at LCHS.

Jeremy Harrington graduated from U. S. Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Iva Odom won $100 in the WMLR weight loss promotion, guessing how much weight Don Jones and Tim Rippeto had lost in one month.

A human interest story ran on the Hohenwald Area Vocational Technical School designing a handicapped bicycle for Travis Ricketts.

Leslie Turner was given the opportunity to intern in the Washington office of U. S. Representative Bart Gordon.

The following births were reported: Lacey Morgan, daughter of Gregg and Rhonda Johnston; Lauren Mallory, daughter of Greg and Lisa Amacher; and Coty Gavann, son of Frankye Svehlak.

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Grimes celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception hosted by their children.

Funeral services were held for Melinda Barber, 94; Altie Jackson, 77; Harlan Staggs, 75; Robert Tanner, 71; and for Ellis Warf, 80.

March 22, 2001

Seven Lewis County WWII veterans received their high school diplomas in a special ceremony held March 18 in the LCMS auditorium. Receiving diplomas were Jean Beatty, William Davis, William Dyer, Theodore Grinder, William Hatcher, Osteen Hinson, and Buddie Mercer.

Four LCHS Seniors joined with high school students from across the state to present their vision for higher education in the new millennium. April Odom, Sara Odom, Christa Webb, and Emily Webb represented LCHS at the 20th Annual Student Congress on Policies in Education held at the TSU downtown campus.

The first class of the Lewis County Citizens Police Academy was held on March 1 with guest speaker Judge Billy Townsend lecturing about the judicial system.

A feature ran about the skills of water dowsers James Haley, Malcolm Hensley, and Damon Pugh still being in demand.

The LCHS Panther baseball team opened its season by competing in the Loretto Invitational Tournament, defeating a team from Lexington, Alabama with a score of 2 to 0. Pitcher Dustin Runions struck out eight batters in the game.

The LCHS Lady Panthers softball team defeated Perry County with a score of 17 to 2 and defeated Wayne County with a score of 10 to 9. Emily Webb and Sarah Jaszewski pitched in the game against Perry County, and Lynzie Tiller and Jaszewski pitched in the game against Wayne County.

Bobby Fuller graduated from U. S. Marine basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina.

Shane and Jennifer Blackwood announced the birth of their daughter, Emily Grace.

Hettie Grimes was honored for her 92nd birthday with a party held at Lewis County Manor.

Funeral services were held for William Buie, 82; Nettie Henson, 84; Roy McKinney, Jr., 76; Chester Sweeney, 88; Ward Turnbow, 86; and for Ruby Webb, 72.
