Panthers Open With Win

The Lewis County High School Panthers baseball team hosted the Hampshire Hawks to open the 2021 baseball season at LCHS.

Maddox Cagle took the mound to start for the Panthers and worked around a 1-out double to pitch a scoreless first. A one-out double by Brody Whitlow and a walk to Slade Moseley put runners on the bases, and a pair of stolen bases and a pair of passed balls plated both before the inning came to an end and the Panthers led 2-0.

Cagle would retire the Hawks in order, two by strikeout, in the second. Dyer Barnes would reach on a dropped third strike and steal second and third before a Kael Feichtinger double, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead after two complete innings.

A leadoff single for the Hawks and a one-out walk would put 2 on with one out, and a fielder's choice would cut down the lead runner, but the Hawks would manage a run in the top of the third to make the score 3-1 Lewis County after two and a half. The Panthers couldn't capitalize on a one-out double from Slade Moseley, and the score remained 3-1 after three. Hayden Jackson replaced Cagle on the mound in the fourth and retired the Hawks in order.

Barnes would reach on an error to start the bottom of the fourth, and Feichtinger and Levi Thompson would follow with singles, Moseley would reach on an error and Whitlow would draw a walk, and the Panthers would push across 5 more to take an 8-1 lead.

Jackson would allow an unearned run in the top of the fifth as the Panthers committed 3 errors, and the lead would be 6, 8-2, heading into the bottom of the fifth. Lincoln Brewer would reach on an error to start the home fifth and Barnes would draw a walk. A one-out single from Thompson and a two-out single by Moseley would bring up Whitlow to deliver a base-clearing double to end the game at 13-2.

Brody Whitlow had 2 doubles, 2 runs, and 3 RBI, Sloan Moseley a hit, 2 runs, and an RBI, Slade Moseley a double, Lincoln Brewer a run scored, Dyer Barnes 3 runs scored, Kael Feichtinger 2 hits, a double, a run and 2 RBI, and Levi Thompson 2 hits and 2 runs. Maddox Cagle went 3 innings, allowed 1 run on 3 hits, struck out 5 and walked 3, and Hayden Jackson pitched 2 innings, gave up 1 unearned run on no hits, struck out 2 and walked none.
