Lewis County and The Elephant Sanctuary Participate in Tree Day

On March 19th and 20th, Tennesseans planted 56,834 native tree species in all 95 counties including right here in Lewis County as part of the 2021 Tennessee Tree Day!

Tree Day is an annual event organized by the Tennessee Environmental Council and the Tennessee Department of Forestry with the goal of engaging Tennesseans of all ages and walks of life in environmental conservation - specifically planting native species of trees and shrubs. Lewis County residents planted 114 trees as part of the two-day effort. Participants ordered their seedlings in advance, and The Elephant Discovery Center served as the local tree pickup site. Distributed seedlings included plum, white oak, mulberry, buttonbush, silky dogwood, and more.

"We were happy to again be the seedling distribution site for Tree Day," said The Elephant Sanctuary's Outreach Manager Todd Montgomery. "The environmental conservation focus of Tree Day fits hand-in-hand with the environmentally friendly design of the Elephant Discovery Center and the conservation programs delivered there, so it is a natural fit."
