Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898

David Gilbert Barnes

April 3, 1943 ~ April 26, 2021

David Gilbert Barnes, 78 of Hohenwald, peacefully went to be with our Lord and Savior on April 26, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born on April 3, 1943 in Lewis County to the late Johnny and Mamie (Porter) Barnes. Along with his parents ,he was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Kilpatrick; brothers, Richard Barnes, Thomas Barnes, James Barnes, and Lonnis Barnes; and sisters, Ida Akers, Neomi Whitehead, and Carolyn Miller.

He married his true love, Joyce Elaine Clayton, and together raised two beautiful girls and made a lifetime of memories. In 1993 Mr. Barnes and his wife began a charity in Hohenwald that was near and dear to their heart, the Lewis County Cancer Victims Fund. They gave back to individuals facing hard times when dealing with the disease, making sure they would have money for gas to get to appointments or fill their prescriptions. Taking that leap of faith and not knowing the outcome years ago has now helped hundreds of local Lewis County Citizens.

Mr. Barnes founded David's Auction in 2001 and ran it for many years before selling to begin his next adventure. David was well known in Hohenwald for the band First Hearts where he played guitar, bass, and vocals for many years.

David was a gentle soul that was always smiling and had a sense of humor that could make your worst days fade away. One thing is for sure you would always leave with a smile.

Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife, Joyce Clayton Barnes; daughter, Sherry Alexander; grandchildren, Evan Kilpatrick (Morgan), Laine Alexander, and Brittany Baynes (Evan B); great-grandchildren, Micah Kilpatrick, Emery Kilpatrick, and Charlotte Baynes. He also leaves behind to cherish his memory his siblings, Anita "Ann" Morris and Erma "Tootie" Barnes.

A graveside service took place on Saturday, May 1 at Napier Cemetery in Lewis County. Bro. Bill Webb and Bro. Evan Kilpatrick officiated. A private family visitation took place at the family's request.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made in honor of Mr. David to the Lewis County Cancer Victims Fund.
