Letter to the Editor

Lewis County has an active Democratic Party, and we would like to take this time to explain what we believe.

We believe that all men and women are created equal. We support the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of the great state of Tennessee.

We believe that the vote is an obligation of all citizens, not just a right; it is necessary for our democracy to survive. Voting should be convenient and accessible for all citizens.

We believe that our system of government thrives on a multi-party basis with mutual respect for everyone’s opinion.

We believe that all men and women have the right to make individual decisions on personal matters.

We are “pro-choice,” not “pro-abortion.”

We are southern Democrats who believe in strong national defense, law enforcement, and the judicial system. We believe in the rule of law and equal justice for all. We support and respect our local and national police officers. We do not support the idea of defending police.

We support the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and respect the rights of responsible gun owners. We believe in background checks for those wanting to purchase firearms. Our police officers should not be overpowered by those wishing to do harm with higher capacity weapons. Parents and children should not have to fear mass shooting in schools.

We believe that Social Security and Medicare are benefits paid into and earned by working citizens. They are not entitlements.

We respect and support all our Veterans who have given so much for our freedom.
