Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898

Situation solved without injury

On June 20, 2021 at approximately 7 p.m. Sergeant Michael Dunn of the Hohenwald Police Department was informed of a female wanting to go to a residence on Oakdale Avenue to get her child. She stated the father of the child was having suicidal thoughts and was violent. She also told officers there were several firearms inside the residence.

Upon arrival, Jerrid Keeton, 33, was standing outside the residence. After Sergeant Dunn and Lewis County Sheriff Department Deputy Todd Webb approached, Jerrid took the child inside and locked the door. Jerrid’s father, Jeff Keeton, who was outside, then knocked on the door and was able to get the child. Officers walked the child away from the residence to his mother, and the two left the scene. Jerrid then exited the residence with a gun in his hand. Officer Robbie Hooks began giving commands for him to drop the gun, but Jerrid ignored those commands and walked to the back of the residence.

As officers were getting weapons out of their patrol cars, they heard a gunshot from behind the residence. Jeff walked behind the house and started talking to Jerrid. Sergeant Dunn advised everyone that the subject was still talking and armed. Assistant Chief Kevin Carroll arrived on the scene a short time after and was advised of the situation. He asked the officers to give Jeff the time and opportunity to try and talk Jerrid down.

A short time passed and officers began giving loud commands and advancing towards the back of the residence. Officer Hooks and Officer Kalum Halfacre saw Jerrid throw the gun approximately 20 feet away, they then walked towards Jerrid. As Jerrid advanced toward the officers, he was yelling shoot me.....shoot me. Officer Hooks deployed his taser which struck Jerrid in the right arm. He instantly went to the ground and was taken into custody. EMS was called to remove the taser probes from his arm, then Officer Hooks transported Jerrid to Maury Regional Hospital for a mental evaluation.

Several neighbors were home at the time of the shot being fired, one even in their yard mowing. Due to the reckless discharge of the pistol and due to the residents living in the immediate area being home, Jerrid will be charged with felony reckless endangerment according to Sgt. Dunn. A warrant was obtained.
