People from all around came out in droves to celebrate the Fourth of July on Friday night in The Lot.
The City reported that there were anywhere from 3,500 to 5,000 people in attendance. Crystal Nash, Lewis County Librarian and Historian, also noted that there were people from even Mississippi and Memphis who came to the event.
"This event exceeded our expectations in the best way possible," said City of Hohenwald Economic and Community Coordinator Helen Ozier.
Many danced to the tunes of the nationally acclaimed band Sail On who performed several Beach Boys songs, while others sat in their lawn chairs and listened. Kids were able to play games, have their choice between two waterslides and get their faces painted.
Those who attended could also ride the City's Christmas in Hohenwald train around town for just one dollar. The train rides raised approximately $900 for the Library's extension project, said Friends of the Library President Kelly Medford. "We wanted to put on the celebration to give back to our community and give them an event that they could really enjoy," said Medford, "The money that we raised was just icing on the cake!"
Medford also said the Library could not have pulled off the event without the help of over a dozen Friends of the Library members, City Hall who sponsored the event, the Elephant Sanctuary who gave the band members a room to relax and get ready in, Don Johnson who loaned his Thunderbird, and many more who gave their time and services to help make the event a true celebration.
"The Library used to be a place where you could come get your books and leave. Now we're so much more than that," said Nash, "We were so happy that we could put on an event where everyone could come together and enjoy themselves. Everyone came and put out their lawn chairs, grabbed a bite to eat, kids played, the band was excellent and we danced until the end of the night."
