One Day At A Time

Series: One day at a time | Story 11

Well it is a beautiful day here in our little valley. I am sitting on the front porch swing and I have got a glass of good cold sweet tea. The breeze is blowing and looking out over the yard the flowers are blooming and the birds are singing. I don’t see the cats, but there are a couple of squirrels. I think they had a nest in the big old oak tree before lightning struck it a few years ago. The old tree is still standing but the limbs are all gone now. At a certain time in the morning when the sun shines just right, the trees’ shadow makes a perfect cross on the yard. Now, isn’t that something? God does speak to us through things. I look for that shadow in the mornings when I sit on the porch and have my coffee.

Sitting here takes my mind back to the good old days when we were little, we would sit and play on our front porch. We had a pallet quilt that mama would put down for us to play on, sometimes we would even take a nap. Some of you may remember what a pallet was, it was just an old worn ragged quilt spread out on the floor. We spent a lot of time on them in the summertime. The days were long and hot and people called them the dog days of summer. I don’t know why but it seems like our porch was always cool. Of course at the time we didn’t even know what an air conditioner was, we didn’t even have a fan.

Now as I’m enjoying my cold ice tea and the cool breeze and thinking about the good old days, it makes me enjoy today and all of God’s blessings even more. Those were the good old days and so are these.

Just want to update you on the old apple tree, I made some apple butter, not much but boy it sure is good. There are still a lot of apples on the tree but a lot have fallen off. I’ve heard from other people that their apples are falling off too. But I will have plenty and I may even make some apple pies and have some ice cream with them.

All my kids came over for the fourth, it sure was busy here. I was really looking forward to seeing them, and we had a lot of fun, I will have to rest for a few days. All my kids are the best, but I bet you say that about your kids too.

Well Bob had his surgery and is doing good. I want to thank all of you that prayed for him. Prayers do work and God does listen.

Oh, about the blueberries, for breakfast we had blueberry juice and some big hot homeade biscuits - Burrell Brown calls them “cat head” biscuits. With the biscuits we had butter and blueberry jam. Are you hungry yet?

Well I am going to finish my sweet tea and go get clothes off the line and say this has been a good day that God has made for me and you. Even though there is still trouble all around us, God has it all under control and I always look for the light at the end of the tunnel.

God Bless.
