MLEC honors short story winners

On June 22, 2021 Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative hosted a dinner for its 2021 Washington Youth Tour Short Story contest winners: Andi Spradlin from East Hickman High School, Piper Belvin from Lewis County High School, Tristan Mashburn from Waverly Central High School, Charmaine Citro from McEwen High School, Sarah Runions from Houston County High School, Logan Hickerson from Perry County High School, and Kaleb Mayberry from Hickman County High School.

MLEC was proud to award each student a $2,000 scholarship and a gift with Logan Hickerson receiving $3,000 as the overall area winner,

Tennessee Representative Michael Curcio was unable to attend, but gladly gifted each student with a letter, a Tennessee Blue Book, and other Tennessee legislature goodies.

"Congratulations to these outstanding students who have been recognized for their excellent writing abilities," remarked Rep. Curcio. "I know that you will continue to represent your schools well."

Special guests included Todd Blocker of the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association, who brought the students a gift and spoke about the importance of staying involved with their local electric cooperatives and always working towards their goals. Robin Conover, Editor of The Tennessee Magazine was also in attendance.

"We wish all of these students a big congratulations on their success and good luck in their future endeavors," said MLEC President and CEO Keith Carnahan. "The short story contest is a true testament to how bright and creative our students are."

The Washington Youth Tour, coordinated by TECA and sponsored by electric cooperatives across the state, is held each June. However, due to COVID-19 safety concerns for students and chaperones, the trip was canceled this year. To honor their outstanding work, MLEC wanted to recognize these students for the time and dedication put into their short stories.
