July 19, 1951

The 1951 Lewis County Fair was announced for August 27 through September 1. Braleys Circus had been secured as the grand stand attraction.

Sidney Ashmore enlisted in the U. S. Army.

Johnie Zimmerman enlisted in the U. S. Navy.

The newspaper reported that Eugene Crowe, of the 24th Infantry Division in Korea, volunteered to carry ammunition to a company under fire that had run short. Arriving at the company, Crowe found that they were withdrawing because of enemy pressure and he volunteered to evacuate the wounded. He was quoted in the paper as saying, “It seems to me that I didn’t have any choice in either case, but I’m glad I had the opportunity to help those fellows out.”

Former resident J. M. Rochelle began publication of the Nashville Post, a business paper that would be circulated among the business firms of Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

Mrs. Fred Roush penned an article about locating and observing a whippoorwill nest on the Natchez Trace.

It was announced that a county council of agricultural workers would be organized in Lewis County.

Funeral services were held for Mattie Adkinson; and for Effie Skelton, 63.

“Experiment Alcatraz,” starring John Howard and Joan Dixon, and “Rio Grande Kid,” starring Tim Holt and Richard Martin, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theatre.

July 20, 1961

Two Hickman County men were arrested and charged with carrying 150 pounds of commercial chemicals to Swan Creek in Lewis County in order to take fish. The newspaper reported “Everything went as planned, at least they thought so, until they started back to the car with about 15 pounds of fish. It was then that they learned they had been observed for about an hour by Game and Fish officers.”

Tennessee Highway Patrol announced the start of a “get tough” campaign in Hohenwald against violators of motor scooter law. THP would strictly enforce license tag and muffler requirements and all licensed scooter drivers would need to be off the streets by 8 p.m.

Tommy Mann, Micky Rochelle, and Don Schwendimann were named to the Tri-County League Babe Ruth All Stars team.

Over 500 people attended the annual Genesco picnic held at Woodland Park in Columbia.

Funeral services were held for Ezra Brown, 57; Wes Treadwell, 72; and for L. Y. Williamson, 81.

“Jungle Gents,” “The Dead One,” and “Al Capone” were the Friday and Saturday triple feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

In area news: 200 fishermen gathered in the parking lot at Laurel Hill Lake for opening ceremonies. The principal address was given by former Game & Fish Commissioner Dr. R. W. Bouldin. It was estimated that 6,000 people visited the lake over the weekend when the 325-acre Game and Fish Commission-owned lake was opened for the first time to public fishing.

July 22, 1971

Two Wayne County men were arrested after being caught making whiskey in a 9,000-gallon capacity still on Seiber Ridge Road in Lewis County.

An Oak Grove resident was severely injured while clearing land when his tractor overturned and pinned him. The newspaper reported that it took “almost two hours to free him.”

Army Chief Warrant Officer James Wright was named honor graduate of a 19-week Air Defense Missile Maintenance Technician course at Redstone Arsenal, AL.

Funeral services were held for James Falkner, Sr., 50; James Hume; Bob Kelley, 56; and for August Schmidt, 75.

“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, and “Superargo and the Faceless Giants,” starring Guy Madison, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theatre.

July 23, 1981

Pride’s Royal Master, owned by Sam Stockett of Jackson, MS, was named Champion at the J. M. Adcox Memorial Walking Horse Show.

Jim Darden was elected president of the Lewis County Band Boosters.

W. W. McDonald grew a Better Boy tomato in his garden that measured 14 inches in circumference and weighed 1.14 pounds.

Roy Sims had a Leghorn hen lay an unusual egg that was flat on one side.

Mr. and Mrs. John Hogan announced the birth of their daughter, Emily Teresa.

Funeral services were held for Floria Davidson, 59; Martha Peevyhouse, 49; and for Sally Rose, 75.

“Superman II,” starring Christopher Reeves, was the Friday and Saturday feature at the Highlands Drive- In.

July 18, 1991

Members of the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department and City Police Department conducted a raid on Salvage Grocery and confiscated 59 bottles of bonded whiskey, rum, vodka, schnapps, and gin ranging in size from 200 ml to 1.75 liters.

WWII Veteran C. W. McKennon was named an honorary citizen of Artena, Italy. The City of Artena named all veterans of the 463rd Parachute Field Artillery Battalion in WWII honorary citizens.

Leslie Turner completed a two-month internship with U. S. Representative Bart Gordon in the congressman’s Washington, D. C. office.

Matthew Tibbs won a Princess vacation at the Bahamas Princess Resort and Casino on Grand Bahama Island as part of a promotion sponsored by WAMB, 106.7 FM in Nashville during their 20th annual celebration.

Mary Jane Parks was elected president of the Highland Rim Chapter of the Sweet Adelines International barbershop chorus.

Berry Sieber caught a 4.5-pound smallmouth bass while fishing in Lewis County.

The following births were announced: Emily Lauren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Nicholson; Crystal Marie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hobbs; and Heather Lane, daughter of Marvin and Rhonda Thomas.

Funeral services were held for Catherine Burgett, 66; Ida MacDonald, 84

July 19, 2001

Nauseous fumes caused the evacuation of the Lewis County Court House. EMS transported two employees to the Ambulatory Care Center for treatment after being exposed to fumes believed to have been caused by materials used in fixing a water leak.

The Lewis County Sherriff’s Department was featured in the Chamber Spotlight Column.

The Highland Retreat Academy Chorus presented a musical medley of gospel songs in the rotunda of the Lewis County Court House on July 13.

Bryan Jude was named Employee of the Month at the Lewis County Manor.

Eagle Scout Andrew Rogers was presented a key to Hohenwald from Mayor Guy Nicholson at a City Council Meeting.

Kenneth Burkhead retired from Dana Corporation after 27 years of service.

The following employees were honored for continuous service with Dana Corporation: Wayne Brewer, 33 years; Paris Moore, 30 years; and John Reynolds, 35 years.

Joseph Rooker was honored for being in the Top Ten in Tennessee for 2001 with State Farm Insurance.

Larry Jones had a hole-in-one while using a seven iron on the par three hole, number four at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

The following births were announced: Matthew Dale, son of Robin and Tammy Adkins; and Kainen Tyler Keeton, son of Jonah and Tonya Keltner.

Funeral services were held for Jack Baker, 66; Alton Curry, 66; Ora Hickerson, 77; and Donald Isabell, 61.
