August named "National Shooting Sports month" by County Mayor

On Sunday, August 8, 2021, Lewis County Mayor Jonah Keltner proclaimed August as "National Shooting Sports Month" for Lewis County.

The proclamation came after Governor Bill Lee signed a similar proclamation for the state of Tennessee, which said, "organizations, businesses and others will come together to recognize National Shooting Sports Month and to spotlight shooting sports activities enjoyed by millions of Americans and to continue to promote a culture of safety and responsibility."

Happy to hear the news, the Lewis County Trap team coaches, booster club members and a senior trap team shooter joined Mayor Keltner to follow suit.

The Lewis County proclamation read, "Whereas the sport of hunting and the shooting of firearms are an important part of the history and culture of Lewis County, Tennessee; and... whereas Lewis County Schools also has a Trap Team, and their goal is to raise gun safety awareness, and to ensure that any student with the desire to learn and compete in shooting sports has that opportunity."

It also said that the month of August was now designated as a time to "commemorate our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and for governments, schools, organizations, businesses and others to come together to spotlight recreational and competitive shooting activities... Raising public awareness to shooting sports provides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about firearm safety, as well as the principles of ethical hunting and responsible firearm use."
