One Day At A Time

Series: One day at a time | Story 20

Well it is a beautiful day here in our little valley, it has been a very quiet and cool morning. It was 55 degrees here on the porch this morning and I love it. The cats are curled up together on the porch, they do that when it is cool. We have four of them and I say they are not spoiled, they were homeless when they came here, but not anymore. The John Deere tractor really has gotten its workout this week, our neighbor has been very busy in the hay fields. Seems like there are a lot of people that are cutting hay this year, we have a lot of people working in hay lately.

Fall is in the air. We were running errands the other day and I saw that some of the tree leaves were starting to change color, and on these cool nights we can even have our windows open. The days are beginning to get shorter, with less daylight it seems that we can’t get as much done. Speaking of windows, I have got to get some washed. When we were young, mama would get things extra clean before wintertime. She washed her windows and scrubbed her porches and she made sure everything outside was done before the cold weather. Back then we did things different then we do now, I think we were more organized back then. Of course we didn’t have as much to work with then as we do now.

Well the washing machine just cut off, I love hanging things out on the clothes line to dry. I washed a couple of quilts, I will hang them out to dry. They sure do smell fresh and clean after drying on the line in the sunshine and the fresh air.

Soon it will be dinner time. We are having turnip greens, pinto beans and fried sweet potatoes and of course we always have a good browned cornbread and a big pitcher of sweet ice tea. We usually try to eat around 12 and listen to WMLR Trade Time, that is our regular routine. We are trying to stay as normal as possible in these trying times.

You know every time something bad happens, for instance 9/11, everybody comes together and prays and the church houses are full and people try to help each other. It stays that way for a while and then it seems everybody goes back to their ways. I think maybe we should all pray and try to stay together and help one another before the bad things happen. Maybe God wants to get our attention before all the bad things happen.

I am taking one day at a time and doing the best I can. I am going to try to help encourage someone along the way. I am not going to worry about tomorrow, God has it all under control and He is the light at the end of the tunnel.

God Bless.
